An item to prevent mind affecting effects? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Something that would work a bit like Magneto's Helmet (X-men)?

I mean, how much would something like that cost?

Would that be too powerful to make a cloak of protection from evil?
Basically it should cost 1x1x2000x2(because it's a 1min/level spell) so 4000gp.
I think 4000 is really not enough for the incredible benefits you gain.

But maybe something already exists that does that (like an armor enhancement or a wondrous item?).

10-26-05, 08:29 AM My fighter has an armband of steadfastness. It's an armband that grants a bonus on willsaves against mind-affecting effects. Cost is bonus squared times 250 gp, like any limited save bonus. That's generally a bit cheaper than a continuous mindblank, but of course less effective.

Other than that, you could also get scorpion's resolve (feat from Sandstorm) which gives you a +4 bonus against mind-affecting effects.

That's not following the guidelines. It says halve the price if it's a day or above. Was it your intention to half follow the guidelines on creating magic items, but skip that part? If so, I apologise.

Incidentally, using the guidelines there's a much cheaper way to go about it. Mind Blank 1/day. Lasts 24 hours, so it's the same as continuous, though it can be dispelled.

8 x 17 x 1800 / 5 = just under 50,000.

Also, psychic warrior's have Personal Mind Blank as a 6th level spell as opposed to an 8th, so if psionics are allowed that's useful.

Of course, these are simply price guidelines for making your own item. I haven't seen an official item of this, and the guidelines aren't perfect.

You are not allowed to make things that work for 8 hours or more 1/day and get the 1/5 price reduction.

That is a blatant abuse of the rules, ignoring the "you can't get a discount for a limitation that is not a limitation"

The ONLY price discount you can use for a 24 hours thing is the 1/2 price rule.

And if you DID do that, then it could not be dispelled (Magic item powers are not dispellable, even if they work for for x/day) They are surpressed for x rounds.

10-26-05, 02:41 PM I really don't see why it would be wrong to apply the 1/day pricing for a 1/day effect. It seems balanced to me - lower cost, but has several limitations:
* Dispellable - the Continuous version can only be suppressed.
* Not Transferable - the Continuous version can be traded between people during the course of a day.

Now as to the cheapest possible way to get it, that would be using the Psionic power, to get:

6 x 11 x 2000 / 5 = 26,400 gp, for a 1/day psionic version, 66,000 gp for a continuous psionic version.

And as to people who claim that using the cheaper psionic version is broken - I say it's actually better balanced, because it's a more appropriate effect for what the item does. The spell is balanced for being able to cast it on the whole party, especially the fighter-types with low Will saves. If you want the helmet to better mirror the "personal" effect - e.g. can't be transfered - then you could simple require a callibration period of being worn for 24 hours before it starts functioning.

Mindblank grants effective immunity to 2.5 schools of magic as is, and in this instance it would make sense to use an ad-hoc price much higher than the one gained through the CL x SL system to account for the usefulness of the item.

The item exists, its in DMG2, page 263, called Ring of Mental Fortitude
costs 110,000 gp, uses Mind Blank in its construction (which is a level 8 spell so caster level 15, not 17 like some of you assume).
Unlike Mind Blank though, the ring does not prevent detection/location stuff, only what the original poster wanted, immunity to all mind-affecting spells and abilities, as long as it is worn.

Great item if you ask me. :D
