I was wondering what the spell level would be for an arcane spell (for a "sword saint, kensai" type) that summons a specially prepared sword to a character's hand. The sword is the only weapon the character can fight with, and if he was captured, he wants to be able to recall it to his hand.

-Ideally it would be a pre-cast spell that summons the sword with a word (swift action?) or move equivalent action.
-It would occupy a slot until it was used.
-The range would be Long, not unlimited. It works through barriers like a dimension door does.
-The casting time would be 1 hour

There is a Clerical Justice domain spell that summons armor onto your body from out of thin air. It is second level. It lasts for a minute per level and then the spell sends the armor back.

I initially told my player that 3rd level would do. Now I am wondering if 2nd level would be a better fit since it will occupy a slot in memory and only work on a sword.

What do you folk think?

Personally, even if it did make it a higher level, I wouldn't want the duration to be anything but perminant and have it work with any itme you want that fits in your hand. That sounds more like a spell a wizard or cleric would have to me since neither of those classes use swords normally. That would probably be a 4th level spell. Maybe 3rd but that would really be pushing it. Secret Chest is the best example of an existing spell and that's 5th level.

The spell would work once, then he'd have to recast it to prepare the sword again... taking the hour casting time again.

Maybe it would need to be reinforced after 1 day per level because the magic fades?

Second level seems too low and I consider 4th level to definitely be too high. To high especially since the character is a "sword wizard" whose magic works only to boost him and enhance his weapon.

The spell already exists.

It is called Instant Summons

From the PHB.

Instant Summons
Conjuration (Summoning)
Level: Sor/Wiz 7
Components: V, S, M
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: See text
Target: One object weighing 10 lb. or less whose longest dimension is 6 ft. or less
Duration: Permanent until discharged
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

You call some nonliving item from virtually any location directly to your hand.

First, you must place your arcane mark on the item. Then you cast this spell, which magically and invisibly inscribes the name of the item on a sapphire worth at least 1,000 gp. Thereafter, you can summon the item by speaking a special word (set by you when the spell is cast) and crushing the gem. The item appears instantly in your hand. Only you can use the gem in this way.

If the item is in the possession of another creature, the spell does not work, but you know who the possessor is and roughly where that creature is located when the summons occurs.

The inscription on the gem is invisible. It is also unreadable, except by means of a read magic spell, to anyone but you.

The item can be summoned from another plane, but only if no other creature has claimed ownership of it.

Material Component
A sapphire worth at least 1,000 gp.

You want something with a lesser duration that does not cost you 1,000 gp each use.

I could see a 4th level spell that lasts for one hour/level doing it for free.

Or maybe a 4th level version that has a 1,000 gp Focus instead of Material Component and lasts for 24 hours straight.
