I was on another thread and thought of a devious item...

Illusionary healing/ buffing magic: In short, when used the character believes the effect usually bestowed is in fact real. It is not.

Ex. Suppose Bif the figher is down to 4 hp. He uses an illusionary potion of CLW. He thinks he recovers 8 hp, and has 12 total. The next blow proves otherwise as he lands to the ground, bleeding profusely.

The character automatically gets a will save to disbelieve, and may be alloted one whenever he tests the effects of potion (bulls strength and opening a door) On a failed save, he merely believes the door is very strong or he rolled a bad roll.

A sucessful Alchemy check (potions) or spellcraft check (Scrolls, wands) reveals the nature of the spell.

Also... if you don't want to be too evil, allow for a placebo effect, like +2 str from a bulls strength potion.

Thoughts on this item?

I like the concept. Cursed items are always fun. The only thing I would recommend:

Come up with a backstory. Why was this particular line of cursed potions made? Rarely would someone choose to make a cursed item only to have it randomly wait for someone to take it. Folks design cursed items for a reason.

This one, however, is not a single unique item. So why did someone go to the task of making cursed healing potions? How did they distribute them? What is the creator's purpose?

(I can see some trickery cleric getting vengeance for being kicked out of alchemy school! )

Or the potion could have been sitting in the dungeon for FAAAAAR too long and passed it's expiration date a few centuries ago.
