| Zebek10-22-06, 06:34 PM | The SRD says for Disguise Self: "You make yourself—including clothing, armor, weapons, and equipment—look different. You can seem 1 foot shorter or taller, thin, fat, or in between. You cannot change your body type. Otherwise, the extent of the apparent change is up to you. You could add or obscure a minor feature or look like an entirely different person." I'm interested in how far this spell can go. Would this, for example, be able to make minotaur horns seem to disappear? Or the tail of a kobold? Or do these change the body type too much? If a kobold casts "Disguise Self" on itself, is the only constraint that it must still look like a Small Humanoid (Reptilian) afterwards? And a minotaur must still be a Large Monstrous Humanoid? |

And a minotaur must still be a Large Monstrous Humanoid?Pretty much. Then again, a disguise check is an opposed check. So if you try to go to far afield, it won't be hard to spot. |

I wasn't planning to use the spell for a disguise, just for a character to pass in public without attracting too much attention. It's an easy Will save for anyone I have to interact with but then it is only a 1st level spell. Cheers John |

Disguise self can be used to disguise yourself as a member of a different subtype, you just take the normal penalty for looking like a member of another race. Your reptilian skin would still be scaly to the touch, though, so I'd make it a bit easier to force a Will save in some cases. Also, many people read 'body type' a bit more loosely than the normal Type rules, and would allow Disguise Self to work for anything with a standard humanoid form (that is, two arms, two legs, one head, etc. etc. etc.) The specific amount of leeway being something that varies from DM to DM. |

The Will save is only if someone touches you, they'd still get a Spot check to see through the Disguise. |

The spell description also says "If you use this spell to create a disguise..." which implies that you don't have to. Is it only a disguise when I am the subject of a Spot check? Or am I just reading too much into this? If someone makes a Spot check against my Disguise roll, they have detected something wrong with my disguise. Do they then get to try and make a Will save to see through the Illusion to what's underneath? |
| Loki565410-22-06, 09:57 PM | Step 1: Cast disguise self Step 2: Tell your DM what you want the disguise to look like Step 3: Roll a Disguise check with a +10. Modifiers might apply. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/disguise.htm) If someone has a reason to be suspicious of you, they get a Spot check to see through the disguise. Again, modifiers might apply. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/skills/disguise.htm) But if you aren't disguising yourself as a specific person and they don't have a reason to be suspicious of you, they shouldn't get a check (Will Save) unless they touch you. (Hey! This guy has horns! He ain't no elf!) |
