| festerday10-17-07, 11:23 AM | I need your opinion about this situation: A roper hits a cleric protected by "freedom of movement" with its strand attack. What happens now? Does the cleric automatically free himself in the next round or simply the roper can't pin the cleric? If the first one is correct (like I think), which kind of action would the freeing be considered (standard/free)? |
| Mediator10-17-07, 11:46 AM | Maybe I am wrong, but I can't find where it is written, that the roper pins its victims. The ability is called drag and does not mention anything about being pinned. Freedom of movement only gives a bonus to escape artist checks made to escape a grapple or pin. So I would say nothing happens besides that the strand is still attached to the cleric. |
| DebiHuman10-17-07, 01:01 PM | I would rule like this: since a PC can escape from being dragged (DC 23 Escape Artist check), a PC with Freedom of Movement, automatically succeeds and is not dragged 10 feet closer. Although technically not a pin, allowing a PC to automatically succeed with Escape artist is within reason. Sometimes the rules aren't spelled out sufficiently. Unfortunately, this is really a DM's call. Another DM might rule that Freedom of Movement has no effect on the Roper's drag ability. As long the DM is consistent with his or her rules, this is not a problem. One of the major failing of this game is that rules are not cross-referenced. Monster A has ability B which may or may not be countered by PC C with abilty D. Nobody can foresee every outcome but sometimes common sense should prevail and this is precisely where house rules come into play. Debby |

| ArcTan10-17-07, 09:23 PM | Freedom of movement really should logically work here, even though by strict RAW it doesn't (since Drag is neither magical nor a grapple or pin). Drag is clearly a *variant* on grappling and pinning and it really doesn't make sense to make it *not* work on Drag when it works on things that are basically the same. |
