Ok right, I have a Rogue2/Wizard3 and was wondering what would be a good spell selection for a generalist, because my characters philosiophy is 'whatever can go wrong, will go wrong.' and so wants to be ready for all aeventualities. He also likes to be a very sneaky character, and so needs quite a few rogueish spells aswell.

I can use The PHB, PHB2, Complete Warrior, and Complete Mage.

Here's the 1st and 2nd Level spells i have decided on -
1st
Magic Missile
Mage Armour
Kelgore's Fire Bolt
Disguise Self
Charm Person
Expiditious Retreat
True Strike
Identify
2nd
Invisibility
Knock
Cat's Grace(found it in a scroll, copied it to spellbook)

Any which shoudl be taken out?

Also, any good metamagic/item creation feats? I'm staying with the wizard levels till their level 5 and within them 2 levels, i'm gonna have 2 more feats, i was thinking maybe Craft Wonderous item and something else?

Thanx

I like that character concept, hopefully your GM will not just throw generic encounters against you, but play on all of you to be ready for anything.

I'm not exactly sure which spells would be "better" but if you want to be ready for anything you should look into the spell components.
Spells that only require Verbal component for instance can be used in armour without spellfailure chance (if you need to disguise as a guard pr knight for instance), or even if bound on both hands (ever been taken prisoner in a D&D campaign? I thought so).
Spells with only Somatic and Material components can be used without making any sound (Sneakyness).

...and on that note I would highly suggest the Silent spell Metamagic feat. Spells will only take up a slot one level higher and you need no Verbal component.

Obscuring Mist, Alter Self, Grease, Color Spray, Enlarge Person (if you have someone in the party as a target), Prot. from Evil, Glitterdust, Web, False Life, Command Undead all scream out for addition to your spellbook.

Also you're practically designed for Arcane Trickster at this point, I can't imagine why you WOULDN'T take the PrC.

Thanx for your suggestions.

Nope, the list is fine. Copy and paste work wonders :P

Some good ideas there, i'll talk to my DM about buying some of them as scrolls from the town and copying them to my spellbook. And i'll look into the arcane trickster PRC. Do PRC's still give multiclassing XP penalties? (not really a big user of PRC's myself, so havent really used any)

IMO, Magic Missile is a bad spell for a generalist. The only thing it can do is target creatures.

I suggest getting a level 1 damaghe spell that can target objects as well,so you can shoot chandaliers, doors, etc.

Mostly because Unseen Seer is better, and Arcane Trickster's only class ability (Ranged Legerdemain) shouldn't require a prestige class to get, considering it's something any rogue/mage ought to be able to do anyway.

If you want to be a generalist, you want to have spells for everything, and I do mean /everything/.

For damage:
Lesser Orbs of <insert element> for bypassing spell resistance. Include orb of Force as a fourth-level spell for getting around elemental resistance. By the time you get it, you'll need it.
Magic Missile for hitting the unhittable. No save, no attack roll. Craft a Maximized wand and have at it.
Combust. 1d8 per caster level fire damage to no cap, with just a touch attack? Yes please. Again, craft a wand and you'll never need to swing a club again.

For stealth and mobility:
Invisibility
Displacement (stop preparing this once you can sink 50k into a Cloak of Displacement)
Fly
Spider Climb
Mage Armor (stop preparing this once you get Displacement)
Teleport

For Diplomancy (yes I coin a term!):
Charm Person
Disguise/Alter Self

For Control:
Evard's Black Tentacles
Solid Fog
Cloudkill
Wall of Force/Iron/Fire/Stone

For Screwing with Other Casters:
Antimagic Field
Greater Dispelling
Unluck
Disintegrate, Poison, Contagion, and anything that causes Nausea. Target those Fort saves.

Try to avoid Save-or-Die spells. They're tasty when you first get them, and you'll want one for each save on-hand depending on what you're up against, but remember that as you go up in levels, save bonuses scale with level. Your save DCs don't. Even though the monsters' do. It's rubbish, but it's true.

And i'll look into the arcane trickster PRC. Do PRC's still give multiclassing XP penalties? (not really a big user of PRC's myself, so havent really used any)PrCs never count as a class for the purpose of XP penalties. Arcane Trickster is a nasty class, worth using.

Remember about Sneak attack: It can be used on any damaging effect that requires an attack roll, within 30'. Thus any spell that does damage and requires an attack roll (like Scorching Ray or Vampiric touch or Disitegrate) all are valid for sneak attacks within 30'.

Thus some good feats would be Point Blank shot (+1 hit within 30') and Precise Shot (to hit foes in melee with allies without suffering that -4). Maybe another good one is Improved Critical - Ranged Touch, so your scorching rays and such can crit more often.

As for crafting feats, Scribe Scroll is really all you need. Anything else is just a luxury, really. Scribe the spells you'll likely never memorize, but just may need one day.

For metamagic, it's already been said: Still Spell, Silent Spell and Eschew Materials are all good choices, allowing for more casting options. Another very important one for the paranoid is Spell Mastery. Use Spell Mastery to master a few low level spells. At least a 0th and a 1st (can always use a higher level slot for a lower level spell), and then whatever other spells you master are those with reduced component requirements (no materials, for example) but can keep you alive and help you start collecting spells again. This caters to the "eventuality" that you'll one day end up captured, imprisoned, bound, itemless and alone in enemy territory. A well-selected Spell Mastery can overcome this obstacle.

As for the spells to cover all situations...
0 - Prestidigitation (many uses), Ghost Sound or Dancing Lights (distracting creatures/guards), Open/Close (set off a trap from 20 feet away)
1 - Feather Fall (saves your butt - insta-spell!), Magic Missile (force effect bypasses DR and energy resistance), Chill Touch (considered armed until used up, does strength damage, good for sneak attacks; great for when flanking a foe), Unseen Servant (set off traps, distract foes, act as slow-moving squire), Grease (exploit low Ref save, boost escape artist, disarm)
2 - Blind/Deaf (against those with low fort save), Resist Energy, Acid Arrow, Scorching Ray, Mirror Image, Invisibility, Touch of Idiocy (MEAN against casters), Alter Self (disguise, or gain natural AC and natural weapons, or boost certain skills, or transform familiar)
3 - Dispel Magic, Suggestion (exploit low Will save), Vampiric Touch (awesome for 1st strike sneak attack)
4 - Shadow Conjuration (many spells in one), Charm Monster

I would reccomend you not take much int he way of offensive spells, unless you can make attack rolls with them to get sneak attack included. And if you are invisible when you cast the spell, they are flat footed, so you get SA damage

I'm a big fan of scrolls, especially if you want to be prepared for 'whatever goes wrong'. A scroll of knock or make whole for that time you fail to pick a lock or your boat gets smashed can really make you the hero. If you arn't going to keep up caster levels then utility scrolls are even more important. Also , if your caracter levels exceed your caster levels, metamagic rods of silent or still spell will be a better investment, use your feats for precise shot and use orbs (force is good if you have to choose one).

Come to think of it, even if you do go with a PRC that can keep your caster level up scrolls are still good and use spells without saves in combat. Grease and Web have special benefits for you, as they deny the dex of the target allowing you to sneak attack.
