| Judicator Shekar09-18-04, 03:36 PM | A few sessions ago, when my players where in Hades, one of the players wished to return to the Prime. As he did not have Planeshift, he insead cast Dismissal on himself. As I had never encountered anything like this before, I simply assumed that he would wind up in a random location on the Prime material plane. Was I correct? |
| kSquared09-18-04, 03:54 PM | From the SRD: This spell forces an extraplanar creature back to its proper plane if it fails a special Will save (DC = spell’s save DC – creature’s HD + your caster level). If the spell is successful, the creature is instantly whisked away, but there is a 20% chance of actually sending the subject to a plane other than its own. extraplanar Native to a plane of existence other than the plane on which a creature is present. On the Material Plane, an outsider is an extraplanar creature. On an outsider's home plane, a native of the Material Plane is an extraplanar creature. Thus, he's effectively an extraplanar in Hades. You were correct in returning him to his home plane (you could have even sent him elsewhere to another plane, since there's a 20% chance he doesn't wind up back on the Material plane). Frankly, I think that's a very clever use of this spell. |

| Judicator Shekar09-18-04, 04:14 PM | I did allow him to fail the will save voluntarily and I think the use of the spell was only clever only if based on the "nice dm" assumption. Had I not landed him in a random location of Faerun (We're playing FR), he would have been f*cked. Think about it, "You appear in the middle of the ocean". |
| kSquared09-18-04, 04:16 PM | You have a point about the "nice DM" assumption, but being in Hades for an extended period of time is pretty much a guaranteed death. Effectively the player chose a chance of living over certain doom, which is generally a good idea. Hell is not exactly the prime vacation spot. |
| Seeker9509-18-04, 08:44 PM | I think you handled it well. The "nice DM" is not how I would have characterized it. It is the "not nice DM" that would have done something other than random. :D And this is a perfectly valid use of the spell. It becomes something of a problem when the entire party needs to travel, and the caster sends only himself! |
| MattD12109-18-04, 09:56 PM | As for ending up in a completely random location I would think as a guideline for the spell you would go somewhere familiar to you. So he might reappear at his home or the like. Oh well just an opinion you would be the one to decide that. |
| Edymnion09-18-04, 10:50 PM | Out of curiosity, did you allow him to voluntarily fail the Will save ?You can always voluntarily fail a save. Just like you can voluntarily fail any check. I mean, somebody shoots a fireball at you. You decide you're not going to try and dodge the blast (say you have an item that makes fire heal you, for instance), you voluntarily fail your Reflex save. You don't decide to root yourself to the ground and somehow accidentaly jump out of the way... Just like you don't start making a sword, decide to intentionally screw it up, and still come out with a masterwork item. |
