just found this handy spell in the phb2, which lets you roll two dice and pick the best one on pretty much any roll you can do (attack, skill check, saving throws, and ability checks). though only once per round.

so i got inspired to get myself a rabbit's foot or whatever they call those lucky charms they chop off the poor fluffy animals :P

i'll just calculate the item cost here.
slot space: amulet(wondrous item)
spell lvl: 2lvl spell
minimum character lvl: 3rd lvl cleric
material: 20gp material cost. (golden dice)
duration: 1minute/lvl.

Use-activated or continuous: Spell level(2) x caster level (3)x 2,000 gp(x2 because of duration)+20x100 for components, which gives us 26 000 gp.

usually this spell has a range, so if we cut that down to personal only i would claim thats a quarter of the prize off, so we get it down to 19 500 gp. also if you feel it should be more balanced then you probably can put in some uses per day, but i feel that kills its usefulness quite rapidly.

so basically with that build you get an item which allows you to roll two dices on one roll every round. is that a bad deal for the price or would it just be acceptable as flavouring to a character?

1) Unlimited would be Epic. You are talking about a HUGELY powerfull effect.

2) For a non-epic item, people are not going to have any problem finding 5 uses per day for their own personal use. You don't deserve a price reduction for only working on yourself. Price reductions are for things that actually limit it's usefullness, this does not.

3) At a price of 26,000 for 5 uses/day (Immediate Action), that seems reasonable.

4) This item is still extemely powerfull. It can save your life when you roll a natural 1, which could very well totally kill you in the wrong situation.

1,3,4)yes i figured it might be a pretty powerful item, but the text says that you have to declare you are using the spell before you roll the roll, thus its not like you can say "*roll*...aah, uuh, i use the 'insight of good fortune'*roll* amulet...WOO i live!" when the DM says "fort save vs death".
so if you spend it on one of your low-attacks before the enemy wizard disintegrates you in the same round, you don't have the chance to re-roll.
5 uses per day is probably acceptable too though, it would make it a bit less unbalanced and more precious to people.

2) yeah i admit that it was a tricksy little attempt from me to reduce the usability of the item to get a discount. but thats half the game when you are making items. find the diffuse limitations so that you get more lewt for your money :P
