"Magic Missile" is a very stupid name for a fantasy setting spell [Archive] - Wizards Community

This has bugged me from the first time I ever played AD&D, made my first Mage character, and was encouraged by everyone to select and memorize magic missile as my 1st (and only under the 2E rules) spell per day. I said no, on the grounds that I didnt like the spell name, albeit the necessity and effectiveness of the spell eventually swayed me much later on.

Sorry, but the name of the spell sounds ridiculous, and is reminiscent of either the 20th century definition of missile, or the name of some stupid magic power that a character in one of those japanese cartoons would possess.

Couldnt they have found a more mythic-oriented name for the spell, specifically given how common it is in the arsenal of prepared or known spells of arcane spellcasters? Spellblast, Magebolt, Spellbolt, Spark of Force? ANYTHING please.....

Well, its a missle(i.e. projectile) made of magic. Wha'ts the problem? Its very clear what will happen when you hear someone casting Magic Missile, you're gonna get hit with something other than spit-wads.

Plus, that's what they called it way back when. Would they go from 2e to 3e calling Dwarves "Squatlings?" No, because that's what people would recognize upon updating their game.

There is nothing wrong with Magic Missle.

Missle, as in a Missle weapon has etymology going all the way back to Latin(missilis).

Its magic, and its "thrown" at the target. Thus Magic Missle. Stop being so modern centric with your views on words :P

A missle is a guided projectile of some kind. And Magic Missle is one of those, and it is composed of magic. What an aproprite name!

And insulting Magic Missile on these boards is like going to where the people who play fighters all the time post and saying "Sharp things suck" :P

09-19-05, 02:33 AM
A missile doesn't have to be guided - it could be a dwarf who just jumped of a ledge into a big group of goblins... e.g. the dwarf threw the only missile weapon he had at the hated green skinned foes; himself :D

You could always call it by its original name - General Mattick's missile. :) But if your gripe was with the word missile rather than magic, then well, just rename it with whatever term you deem fit.
DungeonMaster

09-19-05, 07:41 AM
In the basic edition of the game the missile was a physical bolt or arrow that you enchanted to course unerringly to its target. The bolt hovered in mid air and you pointed to your target and scored an automatic hit.
That's where the name comes from. Your malcontent has to do with revisions that have kept the same name for completely different effects. This happens every edition, and many get "corrected" but some never do and just stick as is. This is the most famous example but plenty others exist, darkness in 3.5 which can light up rooms and forbiddance in 3.5 that doesn't actually forbid your passage. Atonment in 3rd edition can make you become evil. The name is not always representative of the effect, and yes it can be irritating I agree.

Although the concept of Force Bolt or similar has merit, there are actual game reasons why that wouldn't work, specifically in 3.5. They made sure to deliniate appropriately the difference between bolts and rays and cones and ....... you get the idea. As for Magic Missile, the name works well based on the concept but yes, is slightly lacking.

I have changed the name to Arcane bolt which sounds much better. I have always hated the name Magic missile as well. And all wizards are arcane users so Arcane bolt fits better :)

In Old-Timey speak, "missile" just means "deadly flying thing." Could've been an arrow, could've been a rock.

Only in the last century did it come to mean specifically "metal, rocket-propelled, often computerized, explodey flying thing."

So "magic missile" in the D&D lexicon just means "deadly flying thing made of magic."

Is cool?

Couldnt they have found a more mythic-oriented name for the spell, specifically given how common it is in the arsenal of prepared or known spells of arcane spellcasters? Spellblast, Magebolt, Spellbolt, Spark of Force? ANYTHING please..... None of those are any better. The idea of a spell having a pithy descriptive name like that is a modern - really, pretty nearly a D&D - conciet. There's nothing remotely mythic or mystical about a 'mage bolt.' If you look at myth & legend, you'll see that 'spells' don't have names at all.

For the D&D (and RP in general) convention of naming spells, though, Magic Missile is just fine. It's missile (which, as has been pointed out, is just a projectile) and it's evoked from pure magical force.

....so rename it. No one is gonna come after you with a bat. Heck, rename whatever you want! It says to do this in the PHB!! End of....description chapter? Talks about Ember's player renaming Move Silently as "Rice Paper Walk."

Most of the spell names are faily generic. That's so we, as players, can easily referance and talk about them.

If your wizard wants to cast "Unerring Blow," "Brick o' Force," or "Strand of 3rd rank Evocation energy composed into a unulating matter symulus," that's fine. You do that. If your other players understand what you mean, call it that OOC as well.

Don't like a name? Don't come on here saying it sucks. Come on here telling us what interesting new name you came up with for it, or asking for help if you need a little inspiration.

At least, that's my opinion, you can pick it up or leave it there, at your pleasure.

Corny spell names are actually a big part of D&D. Whimsically named spells (especially ones named after their inventor) seems to be taken from the Dying Earth series by Jack Vance, and later adopted by Terry Pratchett in the Discworld series.

The Dead Ale Wives skit has (for good or bad) made the term "Magic Missile" an integral part of the D&D experience. You might as well suggest naming a Beholder something else, or making dragons one standard color.

It is a stupid name, but it's been with d&d so long that it's now a sacred phrase. Chaning the name of magic missile would be like changing the name of Displacer Beasts or Gelatinous Cubes, which, by the way, are also kind of stupid sounding.

I like using the Slayers term for it: Elmekia Lance.

Read the Novels, Elmekia Lance is fundamentally different from Magic Missile.
If you read the novels, you would get a better understanding of how the the magic works. Elmakia spells deal no physical damage to beings that have a physical body, it only harms thir astral form. Elmekia Lance cannot kill a human, at best it can cause a coma. Magic Arrow can kill a human, very easily.
Magic Missile is closer to Phibirzzo's spell "Laguna Blast" or the generic black magic Dark Claw.

Oh, I have renamed the Elemental Orb spells to "Element" Arrow for the lesser and "Element" Lance for the higher lever ones.

At first level you are my Wizard's favorite toy,
I love you so, my Magic Missile,
You make my world light up with joy.
What would I do without you
To make my enemies die?

And orcs would tear out my eye.
But nay! Magic missile is here!
With it I cannot possibly lose,
Negating cover and concealment
It is my sorcerer's favorite ruse.
And so my Magic Missile stays
At the top of my spell list,
And if in all its glory, it is renamed
I know it will sorely be missed.

Like everyone else has mentioned on his thread, Magic Missile is a proper name for the spell, although wizardsa are often apt to name spells they gain in their own fashion to both baffle foes and impress random civs :D

Plus, if you don't want them looking like missiles, you can always make them look like scream skulls, flying mini swords, little force ninjas that shoot force shuriken at the enemy or whatever the else you want them to look like. Then, the rename would make more sense for your character as well. Problem solved ^_^

Actually, Magebolt, Spellblast, and Spellbolt all sound less interesting than Magic Missile to me - although Spark of Force ain't bad. Every freakin magic system ever has something named "Manablast" or "Arcane Bolt" or something. It's overused!

Spell Naming Rule #1: It's a spell, of course it's magic. That fact does not have to be mentioned in the spell name. Magic, arcane, eldritch, mana, and spell are all terms that should be used very sparingly in spell titles.

That said, if any spell deserves the name "Magic Missile", it would be this one, as it's really the closest you get to attacking directly with magic energy.

Other Names

Strand of 3rd rank Evocation energy composed into a unulating matter symulus

It is a stupid name...And what makes it stupid, exactly?

Many, if not most, spell names in D&D are just boring. And what exactly makes them boring?

Look, if you don't like a spell's name, just say so. But don't pretend it's anything more than personal preference.

And by all means, please feel free to personalize spell names. This is one of the thing I do like about spells that were given more generic names. If the rules called it the Roadrunner's Hammer, there's really not much else it can be properly called. But a generic name allows personalized tailoring. One wizard might very well refer to the Roadrunner's Hammer, while one who fights undead a lot might call it Wraithbane, and another might call it Old Faithful or the Reliable Barrage.

Similarly, a fireball can be known as Timman's Fury or the Avernus Belch and stoneskin as the Achilles Effect or Mikey's Personal Fortress.

Now none of these may be to your taste -- truth to tell, I'm not big on most of them myself -- but you'd be hard-pressed to prove the names were stupid or boring. ;)

How does trap the soul not do what the name implies? It traps the target's soul in a gem. Seems appropriate to me.

It's the "sacred cow" dodge -- one step up from calling something stupid, but simply a more grandiose way of saying, "I'd prefer something else."

And I've no problem with a spell called time stop as appropriate artistic license. It reminds me of a line by Alan Moore from back in his early days on Swamp Thing, in which he describes the Flash as a man so fast that he lives in a world of statues. (I can't be certain that he coined that description, however.)

Making the game at least remotely accessible (in this regard) to those who've been playing since the early 80's or late 70's isn't killing the rest of you. You are just as encouraged to be creative in referring to your spells, skills, feats, and characters as the rest of us. ;)

My favorite rants on the subject of spells changing from edition to edition still has to be the one delivered by the Halruan wizard in Jeff Grubb's Forgotten Realms comic. He keeps coming back to "And Magic Missile isn't as powerful as it was!" or something like to that effect.

Naturally, this lead to various attempts to soup up higher level versions of the spell, some good, some bad. With the change in how hit dice are assigned, I can see a move to reform the spell once more, but I can't see that changing while a lot of other low level spells have a hit die cap in place.

Personally, I think it's a steaming load of fly bait. Seriously, only a 20th century mind couldn't get past the most common late 20th century usage of a word that's been around for centuries.

If there's one thing Mr. Gygax cannot be accused of, it's a failure to expand the vocabulary (and comprehension of its diversity) of his players. I've got reason to believe he had Mrs. Byrne's Dictionary of Obscure, Unusual, and Preposterous Words handy when the DMG was assembled.

IE, 'Spellbolts of magical force..the sort he'd use to fell rabbits or chastise a human woodcutter, not take into battle against an archmage of the realm..'. It would seem you're in good company, Milady. :)
