Note: This is cross-posted from the "Monster Manual" forum. I started questioning the specific limitations of "Plane Shift" while trying to familiarize myself with the abilities of a Genie...

*************************************

Regarding the Genies innate ability to use "Plane Shift" as a Spell-Like ability....

Was just reading this over .... description in the MM and the spell itself seem pretty ambiguous.

1) The MM doesn't specifically state that this is an "At Will" ability, or whether it is 1/day, 3/day. etc. What is the default assumption when this isn't specifically stated?

2) I don't have the text right here in front of me, but I seem to remember reading that a Djinn/Effreeti/Janni could *only* Plane Shift to one of the four elemental planes or the Astral Plane. If this is true, does that mean that they can then travel from the Astral Plane to any of the others that it touches? Or do those effected by the Plan Shift effect simply drift around in the Astral Plane with no way to get out except through another Plan Shift or similar effect ...?

3) Is it safe to assume that traveling to the Astral Plane via Plane Shift moves your physical body rather than simply your "soul" as with Astral Projection?

(Hmmm ... I should probably cross-post this in the board for Spells and/or MotP ....) :D

Any input appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I'll stick my neck out and give you my 2 cp.

1) I think that the default assumption is at will. The Monster Manual says: A spell-like ability that can be used at will has no use limit
this might just be a clarification of what "at will" means... but then on the other hand in this case it "makes sense" that the Genie can use it at will.

2) It says: elemental planes, Astral Plane or the Material.
I am not much of a plane walker but the wording of the spell and the monster entry suggest that they have to find some other mean of transportation from the Astral Plane.

3) Yes, that is safe to assume. nothing in the description suggests otherwise.

1- At will means "As many times a day as it wants". Be careful not to confuse this with "by act of will", or other interpretations I've seen on the board that give creatures with 'at will' abilities the ability to use them as often as they want in one round, and such.

2- They can only plane shift to the listed planes, yes. After than, if they want to go somewhere else, they have to hoof it, just like everyone else. So they'd have to find a portal on the astral to go somewhere else, for instance.

3- Yes. Plane shift takes you wherever you want to go physically. Which is why Astral Projection is level 9, and plane shift is level 6, since Astral Projection gives you a second body, that can "die" without taking you with it. Plane Shift mean you die, you're toast.

Yes, using a spell-like ability is a standard action that provokes an attack of opportunity and it can be disrupted unless something else is stated in the description.
