| Aubri08-13-07, 04:20 PM | The Portable Hole, to me, doesn't work the way you'd expect. It's just a super bag-of-holding. Is there any item that works like a portable hole in cartoons, where you just stick it to a surface for a Passwall effect? |
| ArcTan08-13-07, 05:16 PM | That's the old-school portable hole. I think they discontinued it in 3.0 because, even though it was cool, it was also a confusing effect that could have a lot of unpredictable consequences and raised annoying questions. ("Can I use it to kill a monster by making a hole through his chest? Then what happens when I remove it again -- is he instantly healed?") |
| tarkin08-13-07, 05:21 PM | Things that work the way you think it should: Marvelous Pigments. Just paint a tunnel. Exactly like the cartoon. |
| ArcTan08-13-07, 09:59 PM | Where'd you get that idea? Marvelous pigments create objects; they cannot destroy existing objects (which is what would have to happen for you to "draw" a hole in a wall and make the hole real). When you paint something with marvelous pigments, you paint it on a surface and the real object pops up *out* of the surface. |

Hold on, there -- by that logic you can't paint a doorway either, and that's one of the canonical uses. Clearly painting a piece of architecture -- including a hole -- makes it real. |

That's kinda sad, though -- I may have to play with that a little. :) As far as marvellous pigments go, that's fine for one use, but not as a reusable item. |
| periscope08-14-07, 02:11 AM | you could just ask the DM about making something like that, just that it has no effect on creatures, only objects (or at least while the creatures are still up and about). |
| schpeelah08-14-07, 06:22 AM | Or that is still extraplanar space, just a different kind of it. Then, using it to make holes in things won't harm them. |
| tarkin08-14-07, 11:41 AM | It is true that the SRD's description does not make it clear you can make a put. But if you read the ACTUAL DMG, on page 263 they give examples including drawing a pit and drawing an open, unoccupied room. It is QUITE clear that you can in fact use Nolzur's Marvelous Pigments to create a tunnell. You can not create valuables, nor an you create 'creatures', but you can create living plants as well as objects and empty spaces. Also, if you are looking for a small portable gate, they are called Ring Gates. They come in pairs, you enter one and come out the other. They have a distance limitation, but it is fairly large. |
| NeueRegel08-14-07, 12:40 PM | Seems to me, that you could make a different version of your 'portable hole' as a magic item that duplicates the 'passwall' spell. Probably limited to 1 or 3 uses (in separate places) per day, with some tweaking. I'm not one for magic item creation, somebody else will/would have to do the "tweaking". Neue |

Neue That was my initial thought, and I expect it would work just fine. Grabbable from both sides, naturally... |
