Situation: Let's say I'm playing a UMD rogue with another rogue in the party. I have about half again as many HP as she does; so naturally my own character has gone into a sort of mischievous "mommy mode".

The two rogues (and their players) constantly "compete"... one of those things is a bit of trickery between the two of us: We're always trying to steal random, low-value objects from each other--for example, hair pins or shoelaces (while the other is wearing them) or non-magical jewelry.

What I would like to do to combat her recklessness is to buy a plain silver ring and comment about my new purchase. She will doubtless steal it, and doubtless wear it as a way of boasting to me that she's capable of it (and, frankly, she is; my character can only compete with hers because of the UMD magical assistance I get... let's hear it for Cat's Grace!!)

Can I use the silver ring she's wearing (along with its partner, on my own hand) to cast "Shield Other" on her, whether she likes it or not, the next time she goes parading in front of a red dragon? She did, after all, put on the focus component of the spell of her own free will... but the other rogue character might want to one-up my character anyway, especially because she (the character... the player will probably get a kick out of it) doesn't like the idea that the other rogue might have to protect her once in a while!

So: Does she count as willing? Does she get a save? Or does the spell just fail?

You cannot make a PC "willing" against his or her will.

However, you could make the ring into a magic item.

Rings of Shielding
These match set rings appear to be the focus of a shield other spell. However, they are infused with the spell, providing the same effect as the caster-and-benefactor of a shield other spell. The rings work only when both wearers are within 25 feet of each other. However, a slight risk of these rings is that with the exception of range limitations, these rings do not have a limited duration. Note: These rings do NOT normally take up the ring slot. They are "slotless". Rumors of slotted rings with this same functionality have yet to be substantiated.
Faint abjuration; CL3; craft wondrous item, shield other; Market Price 24,000gp. (12,000gp if occupying the ring slot)

There's already a magic item that does that... I can't afford it though. Bleh.

When I can, though... Hmm. A nice Nystul's Magic Aura... :D
