The one in the Draconomicon or the one in the Spell Compendium ? One creates a construct, the other a Huge fire elemental-like creature.

While the Draconomicon version is well balanced, hard to break, and extremely useful, the Spell Compendium one takes the cheese cake. Why? It's a personal range spell, so if you can find a way to ignore spell level adjustment for Persistent Spell, then you can persist the bloody thing.

The same goes for all of the Spell Compendium breath spells and most of the swift action ones in general. They are so poorly thought out that my brain explodes every time I open that book. :rolleye2:

If the creature is a construct, just cast Awaken Construct (and a permanent tongues spell) to get a talking acolyte. If the creature is an elemental AND if you play in the Eberron setting, you got a productive ready-to-be-bound elemental factory if the dragon is willing to put its spell and breath to your deeds.

Huh ? Wait a minute... I don't get it. You're telling me that the Spell Compendium version is utterly broken ? That I should stick with the Draconomicon's version ? Is that it ?

I don't think animate breath is listed as a spell available for permanency, but I don't remember.

Yes, you should stick to the Draconomicon version as it is not broken, is much clearer, and is just overall a better written and designed spell.

While I dont think the SC version is Broken, I did notice that the casting time is wrong. All of the other Metabreath Spells have a casting time of a Swift Action so that you can cast and breathe in the same round. I think that if you can get a high enough spell level to Persist Animate Breath then you deserve to have it (That is a 13th level spell slot and that would require you to be a 30th level caster). And what is so broken about a Huge Fire Elemental? The old version was over complicated and didn't make sense (yea a fire construct? thats called an elemental buddy boy!).

They are so poorly thought out that my brain explodes every time I open that book.Sounds like a personal problem to me :P
