i need some rules clarifications..

As a 20th level caster i could control 80hd worth of raised skeletons/zombies via the spell animate dead. The kind of zombie/skeleton raised is just dependant on the body provided it's not twice my caster level.

As a seperate function i could control 20hd of undead with rebuke undead.

Create Undead i can use to create mummies and wraiths and such which then need to be controlled via rebuke undead right?

so that's the maximum ammount of undead that can be controlled? I'm going to be playing in an evil campaign and am looking at making a necromancer character (looking at the dread necromancer in Heroes of Horror) and am just making sure i get all my undead-control-goodness facts straight before i make the character... any advice?

Black sand and interdimentional holding spaces are incredibly useful for the repair and storage of undead minions.

nice :) what's blacksand though?

also one thing i don't quite understand... While the dread necromancer is a really flavorful class to play i wouldn't mind playing a straight wizard for the diversity of the other spells but i still want to focus on necromancy... but if i do just that with no way to rebuke undead the only undead i'll ever be able to control are skeletons and zombies correct?

Blacksand is a terrain hazard from Sandstorm. It deals negative energy damage to any creature in the square each round. So, you put some in the magic bag and just let it heal your undead when you aren't using them.

but if i do just that with no way to rebuke undead the only undead i'll ever be able to control are skeletons and zombies correct? The second level spell control undead can give you temporary control of any undead, but it shouldn't be relied on for long periods. So, Dread Necro is the best way to keep more powerful undead around. You can still get pretty decent use out of zombies and skeletons though (hydra zombies are always nice).

Awaken Undead, gives you smart undead. Vile Death, gives your undead the fiendish creature template as well. Haunt Shift can be fun, have all your undead haunt your staff, or to animate a war machine for you. Undead Mastery at level 8 for a Dread Necro sucks, we have allowed players to start with the Corpse crafter feat and gain the feats that need Corpse Crafter to take, then at level 8 have the undead mastery replace the corpse crafter and let them use that feat for something else. Undead Leadership feat is nice for Dread Necro that cast based on Cha. If you go wizard Lord of the Utterdark is very nice. Dread Necro that is spell stitched can fill in some of the lack of spells, providing you are already undead yourself. Or Just do both... Dread Necro with Undead Leadership, with a Wizard Cohort that has Lord of the Utterdark.

Where do I find vile death and haunt shift?

Vile Death is from heroes of horror level 9 wiz level 7 Dread necro spell. Haunt shift is level 5 wiz spell from the Libris Mortis. Undead haunting a movable object can animate it. So a skeleton haunt shifted into a wagon can make it move with no horses up to the skeleton's movement rate. I've thought about making A war machine with crossbow turrets. problem is reloading need dedicated unseen servants for that.

I totally should have remembered the first, as I love Dread Necros, and the second is simply awesome. My Necro is pickin that up pronto!
