Animate Dead
Necromancy [Evil]

Level: Clr 3, Death 3, Sor/Wiz 4

Components: V, S, M

Casting Time: 1 standard action

Range: Touch

Targets: One or more corpses touched

Duration: Instantaneous

Saving Throw: None

Spell Resistance: No

This spell turns the bones or bodies of dead creatures into undead skeletons or zombies that follow your spoken commands.

The undead can follow you, or they can remain in an area and attack any creature (or just a specific kind of creature) entering the place. They remain animated until they are destroyed. (A destroyed skeleton or zombie can’t be animated again.)

Regardless of the type of undead you create with this spell, you can’t create more HD of undead than twice your caster level with a single casting of animate dead. (The desecrate spell doubles this limit)

The undead you create remain under your control indefinitely. No matter how many times you use this spell, however, you can control only 4 HD worth of undead creatures per caster level. If you exceed this number, all the newly created creatures fall under your control, and any excess undead from previous castings become uncontrolled. (You choose which creatures are released.) If you are a cleric, any undead you might command by virtue of your power to command or rebuke undead do not count toward the limit.

Skeletons: A skeleton can be created only from a mostly intact corpse or skeleton. The corpse must have bones. If a skeleton is made from a corpse, the flesh falls off the bones.

Zombies: A zombie can be created only from a mostly intact corpse. The corpse must be that of a creature with a true anatomy.

Material Component: You must place a black onyx gem worth at least 25 gp per Hit Die of the undead into the mouth or eye socket of each corpse you intend to animate. The magic of the spell turns these gems into worthless, burned-out shells.

Above is copy/pasted from online SRD

In the PHB however, there is something about the abilities of the creature not mattering and that only the size of the creature matters. I can't find any way to create skeletons/zombies with the only reference being their size. The only thing I can think of is to simply apply the skeleton/zombie template to the creature as appropriate.

If someone could explain what exactly I do to make a skeleton/zombie with this spell I would much appreciate it.

You indeed apply the template to the creature. It's HD is determined by size.

Okay then. Thanks a bunch.

Needed clarification because the PHB description confused me with the size thing.

are you using the 3.0 players handbook? In 3.0 Skeleton and zombie were not templates and thier statistics and abilitys were based soley on what size they were before animation.

The player's handbook states

The statistics for a skeleton depend on its size; they do not depend on what abilities the creature may have had while alive.

(it also says the same for zombies)

As I cannot find anything in the FAQs or errata to say otherwise, I am inclined to simply do what the spell says in the PHB.

Off topic, sorta. But Aren't the Q omnipotent and beyond death?

As I cannot find anything in the FAQs or errata to say otherwise, I am inclined to simply do what the spell says in the PHB.unfortunally that isn;t realuy possible, cbecause Skeletons and Zombies do not have thier statistics determined by size, which checking the Monster Manual (Which the spell tells you to do next after the sentence you quoted) will reveal... thus making Animate dead a useless spell, as it will simply generate skeletons and zombies with no statistics. :P

IMarvBooooo. :nonono: Besides, in Voyager, Q got wounded during the Q civil war, so I think one Q could kill another Q.

Does your PHB look like this (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=products/dndcore/175240000)?
If so, you have the 3.5 PHB, and something is wrong with the text in it, but if it doesn't look like that, then you have the 3.0 one, and suggest you look at the Skeleton and Zombie templetes in the SRD as they will not conflict with the SRD's stuff, or get the 3.0 MM, and use their Skeletons and Zombies

I have the 3.5 PHB and I still saw that text. Perhaps it's a misprint or they just simply forgot to change it? Again, since I can't find a way to create them solely upon their size anyway I don't have a choice but to make them through use of the templates. Unless I could be directed toward a 3.5 book that would have skeletons/zombies by size?

Technically, yes - although it would be kind of like one black hole swallowing another.

Not really.

The weapons were made by the Q to attack other Q and therefore would be the equivalent to a "godslayer" type weapon in a godwar type campaign when battleing each other when "immortal combat" is impractical or stalemated

Short of losing all Immortal "divine power points" and spontanously exploding like Torm and Bane..which immortals will rarely willingly expend thier last "divine PP" cause they WILL die indefinately if they do (as PP is their life essence/experience)..then KABOOM!!!!

They, The Q seem to be able to destroy each other as easily as they can strip each other of their powers and it was a matter of will v.s. will and who had the upper hand, defenses, etc, etc and I kinda chuckled at the thought of god like beings in a otherwise "godless" show.

But then again I do come from the "Immortals are just other life forms in the Multiverse" school of thought myself...either Bullies bullying "lessor life forms" to serve or ammuse their own Whims or self-importance(more likely) or benevolent protectors trying to provide guidance to those they feel they should protect(less likely and rare)
