Animate Dead Question [Archive] - Wizards Community

03-09-07, 11:30 PM The animate dead spell says you have a limit to how many Hit Dice of undead you can create at one time, and how many you can control. When casting the spell, how many Hit Dice can you give the undead? Is it the number of Hit Dice the creature had when it lived, or can you just choose any number you like, remembering the limitations above?

03-10-07, 12:44 AM it is based upon the creatures base HD (not counting class levels) when alive. see the skeleton and zombie templates in the monster manual for more clairifications.
