Animate Objects
Transmutation
Level: Brd 6, Chaos 6, Clr 6
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Targets: One Small object per caster level; see text
Duration: 1 round/level
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No

You imbue inanimate objects with mobility and a semblance of life. Each such animated object then immediately attacks whomever or whatever you initially designate.

An animated object can be of any nonmagical material. You may animate one Small or smaller object or an equivalent number of larger objects per caster level. A Medium object counts as two Small or smaller objects, a Large object as four, a Huge object as eight, a Gargantuan object as sixteen, and a Colossal object as thirty-two. You can change the designated target or targets as a move action, as if directing an active spell.

This spell cannot animate objects carried or worn by a creature.

Animate objects can be made permanent with a permanency spell.

Look at the unerlined text above. Does this mean that I can animate 16 small chairs (say in a bar brawl) and then as a move action, de-animate said chairs and instead animate 8 large tables? The text seems to allow for this until the duration runs out.

What if all (or all but one) of the chairs are destroyed in the brawl? Can I, as a move action, animate 8 new tables to press on the fight so long as I have spell duration left? Or can I not exchange the magic once the object it imbues is destroyed?

This spell seems like it can be REALLY powerful!

the designated targets refered to are not the animated objects, they are the "whomever" or "whatever" you designate them to attack... ei that underlined section is saying that you can decide to have your animated chairs stop beating on that dead commoner in the corner, and attack somebody else as a move action.

Except the only targets mentioned in the spell are the animated objects themselves. Note that the sentance I underlined comes immedietly after a sentance referring to the animated objects. What's more, the sentance is in a completely different paragraph than the text "Each such animated object then immediately attacks whomever or whatever you initially designate."

If it is as you say, why didn't they put the underlined text in the first paragraph?

The way it reads, the spellcaster can change the objects themselves so long as their is duration remaining.

Anyone care to refute this? I would sure like to see some official evidence (for either interpretation) on the matter.

Anyone care to refute this?Sure. And I'll use your own quote, adding one more underline.
