My Bard just picked up the 6th level spell, Animate Object. Yeah, it's an odd spell acquisition for a Bard, but I wanted to try something different for once.

After perusing the 3.5 Monster Manual section on animated objects and the PHB for spell specifics, I think I have a good handle on how to use the spell.

My question to you spell experts is:

What are some strong tactics and potential combos in using the Animate Object spell?

Thanks for your help!

None. The spell Animate object is about on par with a 4th or 5th level spell.

Compare Animated objects with sumoned creatures and/or
Golems and/or other constructs.

Aside from specializedc situations where you can not summon a creature it's only real use is for comedy acts.

The key to using this spell effectively is to make sure you have the appropriate objects to animate. Wooden or cloth objects are rather useless, but animated steel objects have hardness 10, and are constructs, which makes them really quite indestructible. Medium sized objects will be utterly useless in combat by the time you get the spell, but against enemies who canot fly or tumble well they make excellent mobile walls. They can also provide flanking bonuses etc. Ideally you want to use the spell to create huge or gargantuan steel animated objects. Unfortunately you are unlikely to find 40' high steel objects lying about. The ideal option is to combine this spell with a wizard casting major creation, to get a gargantuan adamantine animated object. Additionally, the stats in the book are for tables etc, and your GM might be willing to allow higher damage for specially designed killing devices.

:b: A couple of good uses I found for the spell, was to use it after the wizard cast Iron wall. Just have it stand up and fall down again. The other was to use it on a spiked chain. My DM allowed it to gapple like a snake.
