What are the ramifications of being "entangled," as per the spell animate rope?

The spell description notes that casting while entangled requires a Concentration check, that escaping the entanglement is a DC 20 Escape Artist Check, and (possibly) that breaking the entanglement is a DC 23 Strength check.

But apart from the casting issue, there's no note on why you'd care enough to make the attempt to free yourself.

Does it reduce your movement speed? Inflict an attack penalty? Behave like the spell entangle, but on a single target? Or is it truly pointless to entangle anyone other than a caster?

Entangled is a condition. If you check, you can see a description of all it's effects. Look here at the SRD for more information about various conditions. (http://www.d20srd.org/indexes/conditions.htm) Entangled means:

The character is ensnared. Being entangled impedes movement, but does not entirely prevent it unless the bonds are anchored to an immobile object or tethered by an opposing force. An entangled creature moves at half speed, cannot run or charge, and takes a -2 penalty on all attack rolls and a -4 penalty to Dexterity. An entangled character who attempts to cast a spell must make a Concentration check (DC 15 + the spell’s level) or lose the spell.
