| Beware of Kobold07-03-04, 12:39 PM | in the spell description of an animate object it only mentions that they (the object) can be commanded to attack, but does it say anywhere else if they can follow other simple commands, like "follow me" or "stay here"? |
| Seeker9507-03-04, 12:49 PM | No, it does not say. Yes, you can give other orders. When using it as a direct cast spell, it operates pretty much like the summon spells. But the entry in the Monster Manual indicates that they follow orders without question, and that they make extremely capable minions. |
| glenw7707-03-04, 02:02 PM | What Seeker95 said can be assumed to be the case, but many have agrued that objects animated with the Spell, animate objects can only attack. They point out that Animated Objects can come from various sources besides the Animate object spell. "Animated objects come in all sizes, shapes, and colors. They owe their existence as creatures to spells such as animate objects or similar supernatural abilities." They argue that the enhanced functionality of Animated objects only come into play when they are animated though a force other than the Animate Object Spells (Such as a companion to the Urban Druid). Others argue that that "Follow Commands" aspect only applies to who and when to attack, (Attack anybody in armor", Go attack the guy around the corner. Attack anybody who comes into this room ). If you are of the school that the Spell Animate object can be more versitle than simple attack effects than it can be assumed that they can only be commanded by using a move equivalent action. This due to the fact that it takes one move equivalent action just to change targets, one can then assume that one is required to say, "Follow Bob". It's a spell they really need to elaborate on. |
| smrtgmp07-04-04, 02:09 PM | I would allow a PC to give Animated Objects commands outside of battle. OT-Does anyone know the reasoning behind this being a cleric only spell? It seems like a rather wizardly thing to do (think Phantasia). |
| Beware of Kobold07-04-04, 03:13 PM | I agree that it seems more like a wizard spell than a cleric spell. Bards can cast it too for some reason but wizards and sorcerers can't. strange |
