Animating the Dead and Libris Mortes [Archive] - Wizards Community

12-12-06, 05:42 PM I am awed at the amazing undead monsters found throughout the Libris Mortes book. Even so, I am extremely dismayed that NONE OF THEM can apparently be created by Animate Dead, Create Undead, or Create Greater Undead. :mad:

Am I missing something? :confused:

12-13-06, 08:00 PM No. Only the cheap, boring undead can be created by spells. It takes the evil cursed powers of unlife to make the cool undead. No simple spell can do it.

The book specifically states in several instances that many of the undead within its coveres were created as a result of mortal magic (i.e. - necromancers, evil clerics, etc.), yet they don't sya how anywhere at all. This strikes me as wrong. :mad:

At the very least the book should outline complicated rituals or extra costs (much like the Bloodbrutes and Necrosis Carnex from MMIV).

It's one BIG oversight if you ask me.

12-13-06, 11:04 PM It's not an oversight per se - you would investigate and create the spell yourself, or else it becomes a piece of ritual magic on a corpse (like from Savage Species). The Trickier part is judging what level to make such a spell.

12-14-06, 05:14 AM I'd go by CRs to add LM undead to Create (Greater) Undead. Animate Dead is more of a template applier than undead creation, so I'd leave that alone.
Alternatively, comparing the CRs and HD of the undead you can create at various caster levels of Create (Greater) Undead could help as a guideline to create new spells to raise LM undead.

You would think at least one or two of the undead would have details as to their creation.
