| immaculateimage12-20-04, 04:08 PM | Just yesterday I was repeatedly (at least my character was) subjected to the rather annoying forcecage spell. As my character does not possess the ability to cast disintegrate, dimension door, or teleport, I am looking for alternatives to avoid this unpleasant situation again. [Note: Forcecage, with a duration of 2 hrs/level is simply ridiculous. This spell should be altered before the errata types mess with divine favor and righteous might. One of the methods to deal with both a forcecage and a wall of force is through the use of a rod of cancellation. Per the SRD, "This dreaded rod is a bane to magic items, for its touch drains an item of all magical properties. The item touched must make a DC 23 Will save to prevent the rod from draining it. If a creature is holding it at the time, then the item can use the holder’s Will save bonus in place of its own if the holder’s is better. In such cases, contact is made by making a melee touch attack roll. Upon draining an item, the rod itself becomes brittle and cannot be used again. Drained items are only restorable by wish or miracle. (If a sphere of annihilation and a rod of cancellation negate each other, nothing can restore either of them.)" At 11,000 gp, this is a pricey item for a one-shot deal (a much too pricey item...I don't know where the designers think characters get all this money to waste on expendable items and overly expensive spell components). However, the text specifically mentions that the rod cannot be used again after draining a "magic item". Thus I argue that neither a wall of force nor a forcecage is a magic item, and thus should not be susceptible to a rod of cancellation absent the specific exceptions in those spell descriptions. As such, the rod should not become brittle and defunct upon using it in this manner. Interested in opinions (especially from one of the game design team), before I go buy one of these things. |
