| Doctor X07-02-04, 12:00 AM | I'm looking through some rules for wizard spellbooks and whatnot, and I've come across a snag... The 3.5 player's handbook says that it costs 100 gp per page to add spells to a wizard's spellbook, aside from the 2 spells he or she gets every level. However, I was looking at the 3.5 DMG, checking out the description of Boccob's Blessed Book, which seems like a nice magic item for a higher-level wizard. However... the description says "A wizard can fill the 1,000 pages of a Boccob's Blessed Book with spells without paying the 25 gp per page material cost." So... Which one should I go by? 100 gp or 25 gp? And should the Boccob's Blessed Book actually allow them to ignore the cost if it's 100 gp instead of 25? Because that would seem more than a bit unbalanced... |
| Pathanus07-02-04, 12:05 AM | Wizards can scribe into Boccob's BB for free, and I would go with the 100 gp per page (or whatever it is) to scribe into normal spellbooks, since the PHB reference seems more direct and official than one in a magic item description. If you search the boards for Boccob (with Blessed Book maybe) you will probably get some hits for lots of wizards getting one or more of them for the benefit of having any level spell take up only 1 page, and ignoring the cost for scribing... the book practically pays for itself over its lifetime <insert picture of cheezey salesman here>. :D Path |
| lanilifar07-02-04, 01:10 AM | BBB is unbalanced IMO, as the cost of scribing spells is the one of the games balancing factor for wizards. I wish that there was just a 100 gp/spell level research fee for every new spell learned (except the free ones). Then a flat fee for spellbooks. Then BBB big advantage would be its huge size and easy portability. (which is still worth the 12,500 IMO) |
| Dragon Snack07-02-04, 01:46 AM | This has to be one of the most ignored rules in the books. EVERY campaign I've been in (6+ since 3.0) has let the Wizard scribe spells into their spellbook for either free or a flat 100 gp. |
| Doofus the Illusionist07-02-04, 02:38 AM | Here's something I can tell you Doc'. If you're a DM, which I'm sure you are, just let your Gnome Illusionist have a free Boccob's Blessed Book for free, and write in all spells for free. Or just let him copy spells from other Wizards for no cost at all. It saves the Illusionist and you lots of trouble. =D |
| [GSV] Kirstar07-02-04, 03:31 AM | its anot a research fee it the cost of the ink, quills etc. also what is fair about a wizard needing books worth 10,000gp and having to have lots of copies just incase they get damaged. fighters carry their stuff with them. BBB has to be better than its non magical version, otherwise nobody would use it.. |
| Seeker9507-02-04, 12:57 PM | Old news. Old typo. Old solution. The book entry does not change the normal cost to scribe spells. It changes the cost to scribe spells into Boccob's Blessed Book Ignore the book's misprinted "normal cost". Use the book's listed "new cost" [edit: BlackSmith's laughter identified a potential misunderstanding.] |
| BlackSmith07-02-04, 07:35 PM | Originally posted by Seeker95 The book entry does not change the normal cost to scribe spells. It changes the cost to scribe spells. :heehee so witch one it does? or does not? (some has been as sleepy as i am right now...) |
