Another "Wish" question: change form of magic weapon ? [Archive] - Wizards Community

hi,

our DM was generous recently and we found our first 2 epic magic weapons (dagger+6, ghost touch, keen, flaming and wakizashi+6, keen) - we are level 25 now.
but his generosity had its limits, as noone is focused/specialized with these weapons, so noone is really too happy. selling is not an option.

So I had the idea to wish that these weapons should change their form (only once and permanently, one wish per weapon), we need katanas!

What do you think: overpowered, underpowered? mind that only the weapons physical form is affected, none of its magical features.

You can also use polymorph any object/fabricate for the same result.

A wish should also work, but it is too costly compared with the other options.

I think that it is outside the boundarys of the wish spell, and your DM must decide if he grants it

Poly any doesn't works on magical items.

Fabricate destroys the magical weapons and uses the material to build masterwork katanas

Wish allows it. One way or another...
Create a magic item, or add to the powers of an existing magic item.
...
You may try to use a wish to produce greater effects than these, but doing so is dangerous. (The wish may pervert your intent into a literal but undesirable fulfillment or only a partial fulfillment.)
Wish to add morphing to the weapon and sizing if required. Might take 2 casts but it will get you want you want.

If you can do that in 2 casts why not allow a one cast to perminantly change an item once. Also you can wish for anything but that doesn't mean you will like what you get. Homer got mayo on his sandwitch that he wished for if I remeber hehe.

There is no Level 8 or lower spell that allows to morph a magical item, that leaves the lines you quoted, but you overlooked the cost for adding and creating.
When a wish creates or improves a magic item, you must pay twice the normal XP cost for crafting or improving the item

Crafting allows to craft and repair, not changing the form of a existing weapons while keeping the magic intact.Weaponform or size is no magical power that can be added to a weapons. That means that wish must create magical katanas at doubled XP cost.Maybe the DM allows the use of the XP that was invested in the dagger, but he would still needs to pay the XPs he would have spend on crafting his magical katanas without wish.

That wish is outside of the things that wish can grand and can be twisted like the DM want.

You are right...

ummm, what if before you cast dispell magic on the item so becomes non-magical for a short time?

By the raw should work :P

I would just have them pay the xp cost equivalent to the cost difference between a wakazashi and a katana, personally. :) \

Alternatively, there's this morphing weapon enhancement from underdark, it's +1, and lets your weapon change into any weapon type. So basically, you would have to pay in exp, the difference in costs for adding this new weapon property. Next best thing if your dm is a sticker for the rules. :)
You can then change your wakazashi into a katana as you wish, or a bow if you are in ranged combat etc...

How about this one?

The spell is called "Steal Enchantment" (2nd edition). You take one magical item and transfer its enchantment to another masterwork item capable of holding the enchantment. It used to be an 8th (or 7th) level spell with a high risk of failure, but it is cool enough to be 9th and still be valuable.

I am not going to rewrite the spell for 3rd edition (I'm a DM and not playing a high-level mage right now) but this effect should be within the power of a miracle or wish.

Talking to a genie or higher power:
"I wish the magic of this weapon was permanently placed upon my katana!"
"I wish this magical dagger was a katana with the same magical enhancements"
"I wish this dagger had been a katana when it was enchanted"

Bending reality:
"Dagger, thou art KATANA!"
"Dagger, thy cut and balance is now that of a katana!" (like the sun blade is both a shortsword and bastard sword)
"GROW!!!!"
"Blade, I sculpt thee in the image of my soul..."

actually i saw a spell , i think in the spell compendium taht lets you change one weapon into another weapon type for a limited time
so it should be within the limits of wish to change the weapon type permanently

I'd do a knowledge arcana, spellcraft and a few high-level divinations before I did that... the DM could rule against you for a couple reasons that I haven't bothered to think-up yet.

Hmm.... like that the magic is suprressed but still there... making the dagger inert but still magical and thus the transformation would fail. No biggie, no XP expended.

Or.... the original enchantment was anchored on the material of the dagger... which is eradicated and replaced by the material of the katana, thus collapsing the dweomer matrix of enchantments...and loosing the item magic.

Wishes used to be double-edged poisonous human-bane swords back in the old editions... because you were petitioning, demanding, and bothering superior POWERS of the universe to do your petty bidding. The could be nefarious or benevolent or alien in intelligence and totally misinterpret your wish. Or just want to screw you.

I know it is a weird trick and of course if you turn a keen weapon into a blunt one, the keen enchantment it is going to become inefective.

In general, this thing it is legal because it is the same thing that dispell magic and using shatter to destroy a magic weapon, an old tactic.

And also, isnt a game-breaking thing, you are just turning an item of a X value into an item of more or less the same value, the profit it is the same that turning a regular dagger into a sword and that can be done.

The only unbalance use I can think it is to using it for turning the BBEG weapon into something unsuitable to fight and when the battle it is over turn it again into a weapon, cause you need a level 8 spell (or a level 5 if you have enough craft) it is aceptable when with just the same save you can kill the BBEG.

I would never allow a non-epic spell to affect an epic weapon, unless the spell specifically stated that it could (such as Dispell).

If one of the PCs wants to research an epic spell to do such a thing, then that is another matter entirely. :D

Why be so nitpicky with every little detail about "You can't morph it w/o losing powers!" and what-not?
It's only changing the physical embodiment to a somewhat different one, not the magical properties.
I would say yes, definately.

I would allow wish to do this for a non-epic item.
I would not allow it for epic items.

Maybe allow wish to do it, some sort of polymorph object, with a duration of permanent. The item gets a saving throw against wish when the wish is first cast, then every day thereafter.

I honestly don't see the problem, either in balance or in flavor, in allowing this wish. Wishes can create items of up to 15,000 gp in value, or whatever. The difference between a masterwork wakizashi and a masterwork katana is probably less than 100 gp. Same for the dagger. It's not like he's adding any value, except in a metagaming sense (which we, being good little gamers, are all supposed to be blind to anyway). He's changing something that is worthless into something that is useful, in spirit. But technically, he's changing something that is worth a certain amount of gold into something else that is worth almost the exact same amount.

In other words, I respond with an emphatic, "Yes, you can!"

Thanks for all your answers!

So let me summarize, there seem to be 3 main opinions:
1) yes, do it, no problem.
2) maybe, with some special tricks / ideas etc...
3) no, unless using special epic magic.

I somehow tend about 90% to 1), but there are still 10% of me thinking 3) is right.

Hmm . . . what about using Wish to emulate that psionic power that lets you rechoose your feats, skills, etc? Then just rebuild your character to focus on the new weapons, instead of trying to rebuild the weapons.

The trouble of adding a +1 to an epic weapon it is nearly if not as costly as geting a new brand epic weapon of a lesser enchantment.

(okey, isnt that costly in this cause because are about a +10 and a +7 enchant value, they arent that epic IMO).

If you can create magic items (its in the spell discription) then simply changing a magic weapon's form isn't "behond the wish capabilities"

By the gods men, it is a wish spell!

If a Miracle spell can "avert natural disasters" then a wish spell can certainly change the form of an item with no problem.

Hell for 4000 xp the item should be able to sing to you 1 time/day.

I agree, Would not have a problem with a wish spell changing a dagger to a katana and all its other properties remain the same.

Another thought, I dont know if this works on "Epic" items (since they may be consider artifacts) but... I know that Dispel Magic and similiar spells can "suppress" the magic properties of a targeted item for 1d4 rounds, allowing spells such as shatter to work on them. Could you not first Dispel the item then, polymorph the item and when dispel ends the magic properties will return?
RSBrehm

05-17-06, 11:43 AM
You can make artifact equivalent items with epic crafting feats but they are not artifacts and theirfor follow the same rules regular magic items follow.

For instance a dicentigrate spell can target a magic item and the item gets a saving throw, but it isn't immune to damage.

Epic items follow the same rules except they are above +5 enchantment.

Just because an Item is epic doesn't mean it gains any immunities unless otherwise noted.

Are you seriously trying to take credit for that? I posted BOTH sizing and morphing in this thread before you did. By adding both you get ANY weapon in the game no matter what size and the rules allow it.

By the way, it's 5000. And, I agree! It's called 'Wish', not, 'A limited number of effects, all of which must be stated by the RAW so that nothing cheap ever gets introduced'.

Wish.

As in.

Wizard: "I want this wakizashi to be a katana."
God: "Sure."

By the way, you should look into intelligent items and the Songblade Rapier from CAdv, RSBrehm! :D

Wish is not the end all be all of spells. Anything beyond the listed applications and you're in DM fiat territory.

Did anyone ever think the DM may have wanted them not to have Epic primary weapons??? Maybe the Dagger and Wakizashi are honored relics of a bygone age, symbolic as well as powerful. Why not try using the items he gave you?

Let me get this straight... You manage to burn / pummel / blast / hack into tiny bits a creature wielding an epic weapon. Then, for whatever reason you have a change of heart and realize it didn't deserve to die! Being a powerful epic-level arcanist, though, you have resourcefulness on your side! you could use a wish spell to:

1) bring you former foe's soul back from across the planes
2) reform its mutilated, inert body, and
3) restore it to life.

Pretty spiffy, oh powerful mage! But wait, just as you're about to do so you remember that epic weapon it was using so effectively against you. "That might be a good trade for restoring my former foe to life", you think to yourself (and being the only one still alive, you get no argument from the rest of the room). You're about to use one of your two wishes for the day (you have a spare - work with me here) when you realize the form of the weapon doesn't work for you. "Dang it!", you say to yourself. "It's an epic egg-beater, and I need an epic spatula!" Unfortunately even your powerful wish isn't enough to shift the weapon's form - so you instead bring your former foe's soul back to its now reformed and animated body.

Whaaat? Of course you can shift the form of an item - even an epic item - into a form you find more useful and that's of the same general size and function. I wouldn't let a player wish an epic catapult into a sling, but a light mace to a heavy mace?! Naturally! If you focus not on the limitations of a wish, but rather on the given abilities, you're talking an enormously powerful spell - the pinnacle of mortal, non-epic magic. And doing something that a blacksmith could have done before the item was enchanted is surely in the scope of that magic.
Andorxor

05-18-06, 04:00 AM
The important part is before it was enchanted, there is no way to change the items and keep the magic intact that stays in the area of the wish spell that works without DM-Fiat.

Ok My group was intrested anough to call the wizards 1800 number a few weeks ago when we had a simular question had an epic dager wanted war axe. The ruling from the wizards guy was it was perfictly inline with the wish spell.
