Alright...
How do you make a magic item with only 1 charge and then it disinigrates or become benign?

I want to create stones in my world that when used allow you to Plane Shift (5th Level Spell, Caster Level 9) how would I go about doing this?

Mainly I want to know what the multiplier is for 1 charge...I mean if 50 charges is Base Price x .5, then charge is Base Price x .01?

Welp...ya just see what you can do with that...

Single use, use-activated = Spell level x caster level x 50 gp (example: Potion of cure light wound)

Maybe it should be higher when using 'Create Wondrous Items'. Because if you're using the potion formula (which have a lvl 3 max) for CWI, then you're making Potion Brewing useless.

Make a Staff of Plane Shifting, but have it take 50 charges to cast one spell.

5th level spell x 9th level caster x 750gp = 33,750gp

33,750gp / 50 = 675gp

:smirk:

Please note: I'm mostly kidding. That's not the way staffs should be handled. I'm readying an action to cast Flame Shield if this thread gets out of hand :D

Brew Potion is useless already. You can make any potion with CWI as long as you don't put it in a bottle!

Alright then...

New question...

What the heck does 'Divide by (5 -charges per day)' mean!?

Does that mean I divide the cost by 5 - charges per day:
i.e. 3 charges per day, divide by 2?
or does that mean:
i.e. 3 charges per day, divide by 15?
or in fact it could mean:
i.e. You'll never figure this out! I am the great DMG! muahaha!

5 minus the charges per day.

So your second example would be correct.

Advantages to using Brew Potion over CWI:

1) Pre_reqs for feats.

2) Arguing with the DM about what is possible.

3) Arguing with the DM about what research costs/time.

4) Explaining to other players how to activate it.

If a DM is generous enough to not require research into making magic items, he should still be arguing about #2.

And a good DM will require people to use Brew Potion for any item listed in the DMG instead of allowing them to make Wonderous Items.

The DMG gives guidelines on what is BALANCED, not guidelines on what a DM should or should not allow in their campaign. Smart DM's realize that it is their job to maintain flavor, and Potions of Cure Light Wounds as opposed to one use pebbles is a strong flavor element.
