| Tony11102-28-05, 02:09 PM | Grease confuses me. Here it is. Grease Conjuration (Creation) Level: Brd 1, Sor/Wiz 1 Components: V, S, M Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels) Target or Area: One object or a 10-ft. square Duration: 1 round/level (D) Saving Throw: See text Spell Resistance: No A grease spell covers a solid surface with a layer of slippery grease. Any creature in the area when the spell is cast must make a successful Reflex save or fall. This save is repeated on your turn each round that the creature remains within the area. A creature can walk within or through the area of grease at half normal speed with a DC 10 Balance check. Failure means it can’t move that round (and must then make a Reflex save or fall), while failure by 5 or more means it falls (see the Balance skill for details). The spell can also be used to create a greasy coating on an item. Material objects not in use are always affected by this spell, while an object wielded or employed by a creature receives a Reflex saving throw to avoid the effect. If the initial saving throw fails, the creature immediately drops the item. A saving throw must be made in each round that the creature attempts to pick up or use the greased item. A creature wearing greased armor or clothing gains a +10 circumstance bonus on Escape Artist checks and on grapple checks made to resist or escape a grapple or to escape a pin. Material Component: A bit of pork rind or butter. O = 5 foot square G = greased area M = monster (who begins in the grease, because grease is 10 foot square) A = a PC OOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOAOGMOOOOOO OOOOOGGOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOO O.K., now suppose the monster moves 1 square north. Does he have to make a balance check to do so? Suppose instead the monster moves 2 squares south. Does he have to make a balance check to so? Suppose instead that A decides to move 2 squares east to attack M. Does A have to make a balance check to do so? The main problem comes from the interpretation of this line: A creature can walk within or through the area of grease at half normal speed with a DC 10 Balance check. What exactly does "within or through" mean? From a greased square to another greased square? Out of a greased square? Into a greased square? All of the above? Help, Tony |
| Zherog02-28-05, 02:42 PM | O.K., now suppose the monster moves 1 square north. Does he have to make a balance check to do so? Suppose instead the monster moves 2 squares south. Does he have to make a balance check to so? Suppose instead that A decides to move 2 squares east to attack M. Does A have to make a balance check to do so? I'd require a balance check in all those scenarios. Basically, anytime your movement had anything to do with a greased square, I'd require a check. Now, my interpretation could certainly be wrong - so I'd wait until you get a few more replies before assuming I'm right. ;) |
| Vatras02-28-05, 08:52 PM | Any time you start on, end on or pass a greased square you have to make a Balance check to stay upright. All of your scenarios require one. |
| Nom02-28-05, 09:06 PM | Yep. Any time any part of your movement involves a greased square, you must make a DC 10 balance check (but only once per round, see Balance). If you succeed, you may move at half speed (or double cost). If you fail, you can't move (any further) and must make a Ref save or fall. If you fail by 5 more more then you don't get the Ref save; you just fall. As you prefer, check either in the first square entered or the half-way point of the move, but make sure that players know which you will be ruling before they enter the area. |
