| [GSV] Kirstar02-23-05, 11:22 AM | Another designed by one of my players Arcane Fire Evocation Level - Sor/wiz 4 Compnents - V,S Casting time - 1 action Range medium - 100 ft + 10 ft / level Target - 1 creature Duration 1 round a level (D) Saving throw - Reflex Half Spell resistance - yes The spell, once cast allows the caster to sacrifice other spells or spell slots in the case of sorcerers to create pure bolts of magical energy. The blast creates 1d8 per level of spell (or slot) sacrificed. Each bolt is fire damage and hits automatically. Only one spell may be sacrificed per round. The duration of the bolts is instantaneous, but the spell remains active for 1 round per level, or until the wizard chooses to cancel it, the caster may generate one bolt per round while the duration persists. However the caster wmay swap out only their level in spell levels at 1 spell per round. eq a 9th level caster may swap out 9 levels of spells. This could be a 3rd, 2 x 2nd, 2 x 1st or 3 x 3rd. |
| Beamup02-23-05, 11:30 AM | OK, so this fundamentally duplicates the effects of the Archmage High Arcana Arcane Fire. Except it's more powerful (d8 instead of d6), doesn't require a ranged touch attack, and uses a 4th level spell slot instead of permanently sacrificing a 9th level slot. Yes, Arcane Fire is one of the weaker High Arcanas. But making a much better version of a PrC ability available no earlier than level 17 into a level 4 spell... that's just wrong. Totally unbalanced as a 4th-level spell. Maybe it would be OK at 9th level, though it would still be a spell strictly superior to one of the major high-level abilities of a caster PrC. IMO this is Epic. |
| cwslyclgh02-23-05, 12:04 PM | I agree with beamup that the spell is overpowered as a 4th level spell... dump the duration and let it change one spell so that only 1 spell can be chanelled per casting of the spell.... and it would be okay IMO. I do not agree with beamup that this spell is nessicarily better then Arcane Fire high arcana.... arcane fire does 1 less point of damage per die on average, and requires a touch attack to hit, but allows niether a save nor spell resistance.... I think they equal out nicely (if you use my change suggested above, the AF HA using a 9th level slot balanced against the 4th by having the high arcana usable every round where as the spell would be a one shot thing). |
| [GSV] Kirstar02-24-05, 03:44 AM | damm i thought i had changed it down to d6's also i personally thinnk save for half is lower damage than range touch for full. I did base it on arcane fire which is a super pants ability. its different from the archmage ability in that you dont get the archmage level in additional damage However I have lost a bit from the spell. It was supposed to only swap out a total number of spells equal to your level. so a 9th level caster. would cast the spell. then be able to swap out 9 levels of spells at 1 spell per round. |
| dantedarkstar02-24-05, 04:32 AM | I think it shouldn't be a spell, but possibly a feat that works just like Arcane Fire, but doesn't get Archmage level added to damage (obviously) so it's still much weaker. I would think following: Arcane Fire Prerequisites: Arcane caster level 13+, Weapon Focus (Ray) Benefit: As a standard action you can convert any one arcane spell you have prepared or any arcane spell per day left (for spontaneous caster) into a ray of arcane fire. The ray hits as ranged touch attack with maximum range of 400ft and deals 1d6 fire damage plus 1d6 fire damage per level of the spell sacrificed. It is considered a Supernatural ability. |
| smrtgmp02-24-05, 04:40 AM | I always thought the arcane fire ability was pretty lame. Its OK if you actually take 5 levels of archmage, but even then its only so so. That being the case, I really dont think the spell is that powerful. Its not like it allows you to do that much damage, and you have to use a 4th level spell just to be able to convert your other spells. Concidering it doesnt have the capability to do much damage, its hardly an efficient offense. Can you only swap out your level in spells once per spell, or once per round? In otherwords, is a 9th level caster limited to converting 9 levels of spells over the entire duration, or can he swap out 9 levels of spells each round? If its the former, I cant imagine ever casting the spell. If its the latter, its still not that great. 9d6 fire damage from a 9th level spell slot? How could that possibly be overpowered? |
| [GSV] Kirstar02-24-05, 06:47 AM | the caster can convert only his level per casting of the spell. not per round. so 20th level caster can do 20 levels but only 1 spell per round. |
