Dear Forum:

What happens if I am undead and I have the "turn undead" ability (long story)? Suppose I am being attacked by some ghouls and I wish to turn them. Do I have to resist my own turn attempt?

Thanks for any insight,

well turn undead channels positive energy. If you are fueled by negative energy then theoretically yes you could turn yourself. I'd go over it with your DM.

I can't. I am the DM.

Then it's your call. :)

I, typically, would assume that the cleric is immune to his own Turn to avoid some very silly scenes. "BACK, ye foul servants of AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!" " ... there's a necromancer named Aaah?"

If nothing else, you could say that the cleric could close his eyes for a round (being considered blind until his next turn), so he can't see the holy symbol in question.

you affect creature with lower HD and if the remaining doesnt match yours than you're not affected

tips
increase your turn attemp
BTW you gotta be good to use it so you could get the undead subtype in BOED that is powered by positive energy

This further explains why PCs should be heroes.

Warning: Silliness ahead!

Considerations on the effects of turning yourself,
by Fup, the friendly lizardfolk ghost cleric.
Effects and Duration of Turning: Turned undead flee from you by the best and fastest means available to them.
Fup: "AAH, he's after me! I mean I'm after me! Eh, I don't know... AAAHH!"
Fup proceeds to run around in circles, driven by the glimpses of his own ghostly tail swinging behind him.
If they cannot flee, they cower
Fup comes to a skitting halt.
"Silly me, I can't run away from myself... Wait... Aahh, he's here! I'm here! Please don't hurt me!"
Fup crouches while covering his head, constantly spinning around to never turn his back on... himself.
If you approach within 10 feet of them, however, they overcome being turned and act normally.
Fup blinks and stops hiding.
Fup: "Well, I'd say I'm pretty much within 10 ft of myself... Whew, what a relief, gave myself a heart attack there. Except, that wouldn't make sense, since I'm dead."
(You can stand within 10 feet without breaking the turning effect - you just can't approach them.)
Fup: "Blast..."

It would really help you if you could justify changeing the ability to Rebuke/control undead instead. Since undead are fueled by negative energy, it would make sense to make them use negative energy for the holy (or unholy) burst that turns or rebukes undead.

And if it affects you, who cares then? "oooohhhh I rebuked myself, now I control myself.... oh wait a minute, I was already doing that... I should do it more often!"

how about a new power in this case, such as "scold undead" (from OOTS) "bad undead! no! nooooooo------! sit!"

It would really help you if you could justify changeing the ability to Rebuke/control undead instead.Since the power to turn or rebuke comes from a deity, I would probably rule that this is exactly what happens. And if you happen to worship a good deity (thereby making rebuke "not an option") then you would probably be denied access to your cleric powers until you went shopping for a new deity. Fortunately, there are plenty of non-good deities quite willing to accept you into the fold.

Dear Forum:

What is the penalty, if any, for switching deities if you are a cleric?

Thanks for any insight,

None as written in Core Rules, though the new diety might require an Atonement spell to "attune" you to your new patron.

Depending on how high-level a cleric you were and what kind of diety you were worshipping previously and are "switching to", though "your prior god angy at you" could be added to that list.

What is the penalty, if any, for switching deities if you are a cleric? As K said, nothing directly in the rules.

I have, in the past, imposed the following penalties on a cleric who changes deity:
1. Loss of one level.
2. Loss of one "school" of magic.
3. XP penalty of "less than a level"
4. Gaina helluva lotta enemies.
5. Cursed
6. Quest imposed by the new deity.

Any or all of these may be appropriate depending on the deity, the level, and the campaign.
