| Jaime_Wolf07-26-07, 04:04 AM | So, I come to the point where I need some help with understanding the great AMF. If a character has a sculpted AMF affecting a large area, all except him, what exactly would be the results of: 1. Spells cast at him (would they be supressed in the field and then come back out in his square hitting him?) 2. Magic weapons (presumably, the weapon has to enter the defender's square to actually make contact with him, so would the magic weapons function if the attacker was in the AMF and the defender wasn't?) Also, are there any ways to remove an AMF prematurely? If it was an item producing a continual AMF would the only option be to sunder it? |

They will be suppressed because Antimagic Field breaks line of effect for spells and therefore such spell will fail to target something through the AMF barrier. 2. If an attacker will be on a square affected by AMF, then all its magic equipment (including weapons) will not work even if its attack would be attempted on a square unaffected by AMF. 3. The only way to remove AMF is a Mage's Disjunction (Mordenkainen's Disjunction) spell (1% chance per level of the caster) or Epic Dispel Seed. In the case of that item, MDJ can destroy magic items as well. But i doubt if it's possible to create continuous AMF item. |

AMF blocks line of effect. So people can not cast at him and he can not cast at other people. Single Exception: spells that say [Teleport]. They allow you to teleport even through Line of Effect, because their Line of Effect is through the Astral Plane. This includes Translocation Trick and similar spells that use Teleport to ATTACK someone else. 2. If any part of the magic item is in the field, the entire item does not work. Melee weapons used by someone outside the 'active' square would be considered to be partially in the field, so they would not work. But thrown weapons and arrows fired at the target would be entirely in the 'active' square and should therefore regain their magical qualities 3. There are spells that are immune to Anti-Magic. Note, you can not cast these spells while IN the field, as casting is itself a magical activity that is surpressed. But a moving Anti-Magic Field will not remove a Wall of Force. Similarly, spells such as Orb of Fire can be cast outside of an AMF and used against a creature in the AMF. Finally, yes there are some spells and abilities that can be used to cancel an AMF. I think it is among the spells that you can be made immune to via a PrC. |

| bigbythewise07-26-07, 08:17 PM | But thrown weapons and arrows fired at the target would be entirely in the 'active' square and should therefore regain their magical qualities Both combatants must be outside of the AMF in order for the magic items to work correctly. You can attack ranged *through* the AMF but you and the foe must be on the non-AMF square. |
| Jaime_Wolf07-26-07, 09:16 PM | Thanks for the help guys, and when I said myself, I really meant my square, so it's no problem. However, I might think about that archmage business. Another question: If someone in the field attacks someone outside the field, the magic items don't work. However, if someone outside the field attacks someone INSIDE of it, would magic weapons function? My feeling is yes, as the magic item (while realisitically going into the other square to attack the other person) is still technically within the same square as the attacker the entire time. Last I checked, there is nowhere in the rules where it states that weapons enter the defender's square when they are used to attack, |
| Phalo07-27-07, 12:05 AM | Similarly, spells such as Orb of Fire can be cast outside of an AMF and used against a creature in the AMF. Orb of fire would be canceled by the field On a side note things like sticking cloud would appear in the clear area that the mage would be occupying. |

Magic weapons will not work for both combatants even if only one of them will be inside AMF field. |
| bigbythewise07-27-07, 12:18 AM | On a side note things like sticking cloud would appear in the clear area that the mage would be occupying. No, because AMF block Line of Effect for spells. |
| ReadError07-27-07, 02:21 PM | Orb of fire would be canceled by the field Not exactly. Orb spells are [Conjuration]. You create the Orb with the spell, and then throw it. It states in the description that you do a normal ranged attack to hit, not a ranged touch attack. Once the orb is conjured, it is a normal object that you throw and no longer a spell. |
