Is this possible as all? I know casting into stops them, but if you were to cast fireball to detonate outside of the field, could you do it? What about other spells wich travel in a line like acid arrow?

No, you can not cast out of or into an antimagic zone.

Antimagic fields block line of effect to anywhere inside the field, including You. This isn't entirely clear from the PH ("impervious to most magical effects, including ...", pg 200).

It depends on which rule interpretation you prefer to entertain.

Skip Williams thinks differently.

By his articles, you always have line of effect with yourself, and thus touch spells cast on you by yourself are effective, but suppressed.

It would also seem that spells that do not require line of effect (like nightmare) could be cast as usual.

If you have them cast outside and then bring them in.

But you can't start casting them inside the field

Could you read a scroll in such an area? No. It is a spell completion. So you can't complete a spell in such an area. The act of casting itself is a magical act. As such, that act is surpressed while in an Anti-Magic Field.

Strict Game: No way does it work

Loose Game: No way does it work pre-epic. Maybe if you took an Epic Prestige Class/ Epic feat.

Power Game: Maybe if you took a feat/Prestige Class.

Anything Goes Game: Yes it works, and also, so does a ring of continual Cure Minor Wounds.

-------------
Anti magic is a major defensive spell whose main limit is the caster can't do anything. There is a 7th level version that is used offensively by casting it on OTHER people (Anti-Magic Aura). Why is it 7th level? Cause it lets the mage that cast the spell continue to cast spells

Allowing you to cast out of the 6th level Anti-magic-field is a clear violation of intent and balance.

nope.

From the ELH FAQ:

The demilich description in the Epic Level Handbook
says the entity has magic immunity, which is an
extraordinary ability. The description says that the
demilich is “immune to all magical and supernaturaleffects,” then proceeds to caveat that statement, allowing
three magical effects to hinder or harm it. Not included in
that list is any mention of demiliches being impeded by
antimagic field. If a demilich enters or is forced into an
antimagic field, what happens? While it’s safe to assume
that any magical enhancements, spell casting ability, and
supernatural effects the entity cast on itself would be
suppressed while the being is in the field, would the
demilich itself be harmed? Would its “natural” attacks
and mobility (fly, specifically) be compromised?

Though a demilich is not immune to antimagic, neither is it
in any way vulnerable to antimagic; nothing special happens
to the creature if it finds itself within an area of antimagic. It
can still fly and its attacks still work—except that the
paralysis effect is supernatural and therefore suppressed.

As you can see the Sage didn't correct the bolded part, that we can safely assume is right.

the entity cast on itself would be
suppressed while the being is in the field,Note that this is a quite different expression than saying...the entity cast on itself while in the field would be suppressedThe former suppresses pre-existing magic. The latter allows casting within the field even though the effects are (currently) suppressed.

So suppose the caster has the Initiate of Mystra feat. How does the casting of persistent spells interact? Is it a one time caster level check or do you have to do it each round? Can you voluntarily reduce the DC of the caster check since it's you determine the DC that you then have to meet?

You're right, my bad.

That Mystra question is right what I came looking for!

1) Is the Mystra 'casting in anti-magic' only for new spells, or will existing spells avoid being suppressed? (my group will be assuming only spells cast NEW will have a chance to work correctly; So, if you are in an antimagic field and cast 'shapechange' you then check if it worked. If it worked, and you leave the antimagic field and enter again, your spell is supressed and you will need to cast another if you want it running in the antimagic field).

also

2) We have a campaign spell of "Magic Surge Field", the opposite of 'anti magic field'. All aspects are equivalent to the anti-magic spell, except the level is one higher (7 for wizard, 9 for cleric). The result is a round by round opposed caster check to see what happens in the overlapping areas. If the surge caster wins, then all magic functions. If the anti-caster wins then all magic is supressed.

So, what's the council of elders say about 1 and 2? Accurate? Balanced? Appropriate? Should the magic surge be self only (so you keep your defensive effects, but can't use offensive spells or magic weapon bonuses on others)?

Iteresting cleric Mystra (actually, this applies to Isis in our campaign) Strategy: cast a persistant antimagic field on yourself (can you 'take 1' on your caster check?). Now it will take statistically twice as many spells to do your daily supe-ups or cast on others, but you are 'immune' to magic from opponents. Of course, this turns off all your magic items and there's not much you can do about that.
