| MogliGrimTooth07-11-07, 08:22 PM | My question is..... Is it possible to make a whole room with a permanent Anti magic effect How would i go about this? Can this even be done, without just saying, Im the DM and this is so..... How would you work out the cost involved? Thanks for any help anyone can give..... MGT. |
| TheAnthroDM07-11-07, 08:52 PM | I'd imagine if you tried Antimagic field would cancel permenancy. Thus causing at cataclysmic explosion of raw arcane energy. :D ...... Or just causing both spells to fail. |

| DM Zoc07-11-07, 08:58 PM | I'm pretty sure there's an "anti-magic chamber" style room-enchant. I'd check the Draconomicon if I had it at hand. |

| TheAnthroDM07-11-07, 09:37 PM | Stronghold builder's guide? Never heard of it, third party supplement or 3.0 I'm guessing? |
| Black_Scorpion07-12-07, 02:23 AM | I think that it might be possible. Epic level maybe? Or you could just go in the way of artifacts and say that it is an old room in a dungeon/castle. I would guess this is possible in order to prevent magic-user "criminals" to get out of prison but the actual method escapes me at this moment. |

Make a magic trap that casts targeted Greater Dispellings at every legal target in the room other than itself, round after round. Not quite what you want, but the closest I could come up with without dealing with an Antimagic mess... Of course, the CR would go through the roof... |
| Dalthbar07-12-07, 07:48 AM | If the DM wants to create such a room and has a high level spell caster that would have done so, then it's simply something that said high level caster has spent countless days/weeks/months/etc. studying and then creating. You can either do it as a wondrous item, or as an area spell with a permanent duration. Since AMF is a 6th level spell, I don't think it should be a problem for a wizard to use a wish to create a room-sized, permanent AMF. |
| TaiSharShaidar07-12-07, 10:02 AM | You could have the room extend into a dead magic zone, that effectively AMF’s the room. |
| HellflameArcanite07-12-07, 10:13 AM | There might be something in Stronghold Builder's Guide, but I'm not sure. It's 3e anyway, so the prices are probably way off. An alternative would be to ask your DM if you could create a new wondrous item, which would have that property. It would also make a cool plot device. |
| zorgling2507-12-07, 10:45 AM | You could have the room extend into a dead magic zone, that effectively AMF’s the room. 1) AFAIK that's a concept that applies pretty exclusively to Faerun (though correct me if I'm wrong) 2) Even in Faerun, there are too many ways to get around that for it to useful. |
| Kursk07-12-07, 10:53 AM | My question is..... Is it possible to make a whole room with a permanent Anti magic effect Yes. How would i go about this? You're the DM, just clap your hands and, poof! there's the room. Can this even be done, without just saying, Im the DM and this is so..... Yes, Craft Wondrous Item. Might take a very high level spell caster but,... How would you work out the cost involved? Base it on how useful it is to start. Look at other wondrous items that are large etc. Shouldn't take you more than a few minutes to price. |
| AaronDireBear07-12-07, 12:42 PM | How does an "anti magic" spell even work? wouldnt it just defeat itself? I mean AMF is itself a form of magic right? |
| Kursk07-12-07, 12:48 PM | How does an "anti magic" spell even work? wouldnt it just defeat itself? I mean AMF is itself a form of magic right? It's magic in the way that anti-matter is matter. |
| cato07-12-07, 04:20 PM | There is a field spell you can use in MoF i think but not sure, that absorbs any attempted spell. Every time the enchant gathers enough levels it releases a spell (set at the casting of this field) |
| redscizor07-12-07, 04:27 PM | We always have jails whith dimensional anchor, antimagic field, wall of force and all permanent edit: remplace jail for anchor |
| MogliGrimTooth07-12-07, 05:10 PM | Hrm... Yeah.. To be honest I might just have to home rule it.... I actually dont want it to be that expensive.... But to be expensive enought that only nobles and rich merchants can afford it. But at the same time I want to limit it to buildings/rooms, so Pc's can not abuse it and have it put on thier own items, apart from buildings they own.... Will have to create a spell i Think.... Just need to think of a reason the spell only affects buildings. And a reason it will not work on other things..... May just go with somthing like this.... Mage to PC "Its a very old magic, we know how to cast it, but not how it was created or how to make it work for anything other than buildings...." To Limit the spell I will make it that it can only be cast when the building/room is being constructed. That way PCs can not just cast it in a dungeon to foil any magic/magic users... What level would you assign this spell? Or how would you create this spell? I want rich merchants/Nobels to be able to afford it..... E.g. A wealthy Tavern owner who does not want magic to work within his inn... All weapons are handed over when entering the tavern so everyone knows it is a safe place to stay. Any ideas? Thanks MGT. |
| xXLyzoldaXx07-12-07, 07:35 PM | This isn't something you could easily implement to be commonly done, but here is what I would do if I simply wanted a challenging room in a dungeon I had crafted to be antimagic. In my created realm's cosmology, their is a plane of null magic so to speak. I would design it so that upon entering the room the players were actually entering a different plane entirely, in this case, the null plane. Imagine it, if you will, as the material plane, and the null plane... sitting in the same extradimensional space. When they step out of the room, they step out of that plane. |
| ArcTan07-14-07, 01:41 AM | Stronghold Builder's Guide lets you make antimagic rooms, and Dungeonscape lets you make antimagic traps. Both are WotC-created (although SBG is 3.0). |
