Can an Archmage use his Mastery of Shaping ability to create an Antimagic field that that ignores his own (center) square?
How would this be handled?
Can he cast spells out at all?
Since the effect is centered on him, if he creates other gaps (via Mastery of Shaping) would those rotate with him or remain static?

Since the field is centered on and moves with you, it'd work just find to give yourself a line of fire strait ahead. It's great for turning yourself into a sort of tank (in a very different and sense than the typical use of the word).

It's a rather nice tactic. I'm just saddened that no one on the Archmage thread reacted to my suggestion of shaping Mage's Disjunction in a similar way. I'd love to just have it work on a single 5ft cube (the minimum dimensions as I recall it). Who doesn't love targeted MDJ?

Doing it this way also lets you keep the bonuses from all the buff you have on youself. Plus it iritates the enemies to no end. Irritating one's enemies is always of high importance :)

I don't allow it, but...

If you do allow it, realize that the shaping is in 5' square/cube increments. So if he shapes a 5' opening to let magic out, it is also a 5' opening that lets magic in.

Also, I can't see having the opening shift directions with the magic user, since there is no facing in D&D. For those that would allow it, how would you handle it?

take the widen spell feat and apply it to antimagic field, then use mastery of shaping to create a 10ft bubble in the center. Now cast prismatic sphere inside the bubble...since the outside of the sphere is flush with the surface of the shell, it can't be dispelled or destroyed short of MDJ or a rod of cancellation...

At first glance, that looks like a fun plan.

Shaped antimagic fields are generally good at protecting you from ranged spells, but won't help you too much in mêlée. Your magical protection is active when you're attacked physically, but similarly, the attacker's magical buffs recreate as he attacks. Likewise, you lose your buffs briefly if you attack out of your live magic zone.

Likewise, you lose your buffs briefly if you attack out of your live magic zone.Have you seen this ruling somewhere? I personally would rule that any buffs on your weapon would work when attacking from an AMF into a non-AMF, but buffs on you wouldn't since you are still in the AMF. It wouldn't make sense otherwise (especially for things like Dex and Str buffs).

The only other way I could see it is not even including the weapon buffs when attacking from an AMF, which makes sense game mechanics-wise but doesn't make enough logical sense to me.

I have not found this to be abusive at all.

However, the ability to become IMMUNE to the Anti-Magic field can be abusive.

As that ability is granted by a god of Magic, I generally rule that anyone that worships a god of Magic can never intentionally create an Anti-Magic Field. Such a thing is blasphemous.

is antimagic field an emanation? if so, they archmage with the five foot path through the field could take the epic feat permanent emanation and make it so :) then he'd never be caught without his antimagic shield up :)
