I'm in a disagreement over the interpretation of rules regarding antimagic fields. In the description of the spell, and again in the DMG description, antimagic field says it doesn't affect Wall of Force and Prismatic Sphere/Wall spells. I interpret this to mean that if those effects are already in existence when an antimagic field is brought up, they are not affected. But I also think those spells cannot be newly cast while within an antimagic field. One of my players, a wizard, disagrees with me. He thinks those spells are capable of being cast by a caster within an antimagic field. The description of antimagic field is not explicit on this. Anyone know who's right?

You're right.
AMF will not dispel / suppress an existing wall of force.
You cannot cast any spell while in an AMF.

Thank you Seeker95. By the way, there is a new 9th level spell in Lords of Madness, the book of aberrations, that allows you to cast one 4th level spell or lower while within an antimagic field or a dead magic area. It's called Invoke Magic, page 212.

I assure you that such a spell will not be permitted in my campaign.
It is not that it is "too powerful" but rather, too concept-breaking.
I prefer consistency. :D

You can cast if you are surrounded by an antimagic field. That is if you cast the spell and have Mastery Shaping. You can shape the spell around you. Its really only good for buffs and such since you still cant cast through it at opponants

No, If LoE is required you can't cast anything through a AMF, the AMF blocks LoE
