Is there a maximum number a person can have in orbit around his head?

Once you have 10,000 you get 20% concealment. :D

No maximum, but maybe you have to make a houserule on that. My current character has five of them floating around him, and my dm says that it is getting somewhat crowded around his head. He has a point of course. What can you see if you have two dozens of iouns stones flying around you? (other than the stones, that is).

Yes there is a limit, however it is so insanly high, that it really doesn't matter.
The limit is that an ioun stone must float within the area 1-3 ft from your head - and must be in orbit... so you can calculate how many Ioun stones you can have i action at a time.. :)

The limit is whatever ad hoc cap the DM chooses to apply.

Kerrexl is right so for the sake of argument lets assume each ioun stone is 1"x1"x1"

there would be 24 cylindrical zones from 12" to 36" radius in 1" intervals
the height of the cylinder would extend from base of neck to a little above top of head .....say 16" high

24x3.14159=75.39 round down=75 x 16= 1200 stones in the inner track
.............23 tracks to go but thats a lot of stones..........more if the size is 1/2"x1/2"x1/2" or smaller, oh well someone else can do the progression
