| vahju03-09-08, 01:02 PM | The group that I am playing has 9 people of levels 18-19, 4 of which are spell casters. 1 cleric, 1 cleric / mage, 1 red wizard of thay, and 1 warmage. The other four our rogue / fighter, paladin, ranger, and fighter / Prc (not sure name but gets alot of attachks when he moves. We are in a encounter against 8 illithids and some kind of aspect of the elder brain. The group has 24 hours to prepare so just wondering if there are any specific spells that are geared towards psionics. I thought there was a spell or two that would took away psi points. We are using the Psionic Magic transparency rules and already aware of the basics (detect magic, dispel magic, and anti magic). Any tips on what spells to use would be great. I am one playing the warmage so I know my selection is limited. I going to stick with spells that have no SR and hopefully no save. Though if they line up real nice I can through a arc lightning or two. |
| vahju03-09-08, 03:23 PM | I forgot to note that we can only use WoTc materials and cannot use Forgotten realms or Eberron Campaign setting material. |
| JulesCARV03-09-08, 03:44 PM | Sounds like you're looking for the psychic turmoil (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/spells/psychicTurmoil.htm) and greater psychic turmoil. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/spells/psychicTurmoilGreater.htm) |
| Yadot03-09-08, 09:26 PM | Try to get a pound or more of quintessence (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/quintessence.htm). Within a 5 ft radius: "Powers require twice as many power points to manifest, unless the manifester makes a successful DC 16 Will save each time he or she attempts to manifest a power. Also in these circumstances, manifesting a psi-like ability that is usable at will is a full-round action rather than a standard action." |
| vahju03-10-08, 12:26 AM | Thanks for the link JulesCarv. Those two spells should help out immensely. Yodat we don't have any psionic weilding PCs in our group, even if we did I think the squid heads would have a easy time making a DC 16 will save. |
| Lycanthromancer03-11-08, 03:52 PM | Make sure you have mind blank, dispel magic, dimensional anchor, and (if possible) mordenkainen's disjunction. |
| vahju03-11-08, 07:31 PM | What type of protection does Mind Blank provide related to psionics? I like the Mordekainen's Disjunction idea. Will have to see if the two wizards can access that spell. Also is there any spell that can protect against the Illithid's mind blast. |
| tyrecian03-11-08, 07:45 PM | Also is there any spell that can protect against the Illithid's mind blast. Spell Immunity From the SRD: Spell immunity protects against spells, spell-like effects of magic items, and innate spell-like abilities of creatures. Psionic blast is 3rd level on Psion spell list, so comparable to 3rd level, which fits into the 4th or lower cat. for the spell. We used this against a mind flayer at far lower levels. Takes them out pretty nicely if they are relying heavily on this power. At your levels though, expect some MF/Sorcerers, which are also nasty :) |
| Lycanthromancer03-11-08, 07:52 PM | Mind blank makes you utterly immune to to anything with the [mind affecting] descriptor, which is useful to prevent becoming dominated (one of the mind flayers' favored tactics). Wait, are these psionic mind flayers, or arcane ones? Y'know, are they actually using psionics? |

Does that mean major/minor globe of invulnerability would protect against this since the squid head stunning is emulating a 3rd level power? At your levels though, expect some MF/Sorcerers, which are also nasty :) What do you mean by MF/Sorcerers? Mainly what is MF? |
| Lycanthromancer03-11-08, 07:56 PM | Mind blast is the equivalent of a 4th level spell. |
| vahju03-11-08, 07:57 PM | Mind blank makes you utterly immune to to anything with the [mind affecting] descriptor, which is useful to prevent becoming dominated (one of the mind flayers' favored tactics). Any chance you can point me to page in any book that states this? My DM doesn't really believe in statement, "they said it on the forums". [ Wait, are these psionic mind flayers, or arcane ones? Y'know, are they actually using psionics? As far as I know these are psionic mind flayers. We have yet to encounter any spell casters or combination spell casting / psionic combinations. |
| Lycanthromancer03-11-08, 07:59 PM | Mind blank, (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/mindBlank.htm) from the SRD: Abjuration Level: Protection 8, Sor/Wiz 8 Components: V, S Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels) Target: One creature Duration: 24 hours Saving Throw: Will negates (harmless) Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless) The subject is protected from all devices and spells that detect, influence, or read emotions or thoughts. This spell protects against all mind-affecting spells and effects as well as information gathering by divination spells or effects. Mind blank even foils limited wish, miracle, and wish spells when they are used in such a way as to affect the subject’s mind or to gain information about it. In the case of scrying that scans an area the creature is in, such as arcane eye, the spell works but the creature simply isn’t detected. Scrying attempts that are targeted specifically at the subject do not work at all. So he's using the ones from the Expanded Psionics Handbook, rather than the Monster Manual? This is important. |
| vahju03-11-08, 08:06 PM | Thanks Lycanthromancer. I just found the link as you posted. I can only assume my DM is using the mind flayers from the XPH. Though he does tend to modify creatures a bit. One of the mind flayers is a bit tougher, which I eluded to earlier appears to be something like a "aspect of the elder brain". I know there is no such creature but this one flayer has a really big head and touch AC through the roof. Thanks for everyone's help and keep the ideas coming. I will post anything I find as well so other people can benefit. I do recall a spell in one of the books that actually does 1d6 per level of psi point damange. Not sure which one but I do remember it being a direct target spell. |
| PhaedrusXY03-12-08, 02:05 AM | Lesser Globe of Invulnerability. Alot of psions rely on augmented low level powers (Charm, Astral Construct, etc). Even when augmented, with metapsionics applied, etc, they are still only low level powers, and are blocked by this. |
| Speedy03-15-08, 11:01 PM | I'm one of the players with Vahju, and as usual he got a few things wrong. The current roster is 1 cleric, 1 cleric/mage/mystic theurge, 1 mage/red wizard (personally consider him as a invoker with a penchant for acid damage), 1 warmage (Vahju), 1 paladin/knight of the chalice, 1 fighter/thief/gnome giant slayer, 1 swashbuckler/dervish (me). (That makes it 7 player characters not 9 - this is why we don't let you divy up the treasure you can't count.) Ranger?? What ranger?? That player hasn't been around for over a year or more. Vahju you ninny This info may not seem important but I only just started going over this thread, plus I enjoy busting Vahju's chops. (Heh-heh) :D |
| Speedy03-16-08, 01:19 AM | Mind blank - like it, like it Mordenkainen's Disjunction - eh, alright as a last ditch effort, but greater, reaving, superior or improved (I think one of theses two exist) dipel magic first or maybe the following spell before this one Antimagic field - no spell, spell-like abilities, psionics, or supernatual abilities. Can we say calamari? ;) Reciprocal gyre - sure they may use psionics, but we cast spells on them (at them) and then make them pay for it :D Globe of Invunerability, spell immunity - nice, nice Psychic turmoil and greater - okay, but knowing that the spellcasters try to stay out of harm's way the temp. hp are a bit of a waste but the loss of psi points is good Assay Resistance, Mind Fog, Bestow Cuse, Greater Bestow Curse, Energy Vulnerability, Spell Enhancer, Spell Vulnerability - make them more vunlnerable to our spells and weaken their offense. (Then make them pay for it, see above) Know Opponent, know vulnerabilities, etc. - the more we know about these things th better prepared we will be Spheres of whatever or Bigby's (insert adjective here) hand(fist) Hook a melee guy up with some fast healing too, whydontcha! By now you should get an idea of where I'm going. Yes, that's right. To the nearest pub - it is St. Patrick's Day Weekend afterall. :P |
