| NeueRegel08-30-07, 11:34 PM | As noted, 3.5 core rules. Standard wizard, already leveled, no new prestige splat stuff. Armor class and dex will *never* amount to anything. Is there a way to increase the miss chance above 50%? I know they don't stack, but multiple effects might. Using now: Displacement or Invisibility; Ring of Blinking. I think those are two separate ones. Are there more, in core rules? That's 50 and 50, if detected, so that's a net result of two rolls to equal 25. Can I lower this any more? And I know about "mirror image", but I hate that spell, just because it's silly looking. (Trying to think of a way to give the same effect without it, another spell that is not so gauche looking!) Any ideas? Neue |
| NobodyRemembersThis08-30-07, 11:40 PM | There's Cloak of Chaos, a cleric spell (get it in a wonderous item mebbe?) |
| ToastedAmphibian08-31-07, 12:13 AM | Fog cloud, obscuring mist, darkness. Anything that reduces visibility? |
| deanruel08-31-07, 12:36 AM | Cloak Dance, general feat in the Psionic's handbook. |
| BrutishCelt08-31-07, 02:02 AM | Add a mirror image spell to your blur or displacement casting, and you become rather difficult to hit on the first couple of tries. The blur effect probably wouldn't apply to the mirror images, but I see no reason why it shouldn't work if you do want to allow it. That brooks another question: If you've got -say- a greater invisibility spell active and then cast mirror image, are the mirror images also invisible [except to critters that can see invisible]? If the mirror images are invisible, then I would think it appropriate if the blur or displacement would function normally on your mirror images. That'd increase the lifespan of your mirror images quite a bit, and buy you another round or two to get away from your attacker and put Joe Fighter between the two of you while you rain down pain and destruction from on high [because you should really be flying so as to stay out of the reach of your lessers, should the terrain permit it]. Also, blink is a good bit o' juju to throw into the mix. It's rather hard for them to wallop you when you're on another plane of existence [thus the miss chance afforded by the spell]. As for multiple effects that provide a miss chance, I would simply allow effects that provide a miss chance due to different sources [concealment, simply not being there, etc] to be checked separately. Sure you won't have a hard and fast 95% miss chance, but you could have the attacker end up rolling 2 or 3 times to see if they really did hit you. I'm no good with statistics, so I'll not try to crunch the numbers on what your effective miss chance would be if you had displacement [illusion], veil of shadow[evocation] & blink [transmutation] all active at once. |
| jaelis08-31-07, 08:12 AM | Fog cloud, obscuring mist, darkness. Anything that reduces visibility? Once you are invisible (= totally concealed) none of this matters. Also, blink and invisibility probably shouldn't completely stack, given the way blink is described. A;so not sure that veil of shadows and displacement should stack, I thought they were both concealment. Guess the wording is a little open to interpretation. Mirror image + blink + displacement is a pretty good combo, if allowed (and even better with greater blink). You can also get a stacking miss chance from being incorporeal, such as from the ghost form spell. If you're open to creative ideas, you could get a cohort/follower, and have him start grappling you but not doing any damage. Make yourself as small as possible and your friend as large as possible, and you get a pretty good miss chance vs ranged attacks at least. |

| Nephlite08-31-07, 09:26 AM | Cloak Dance, general feat in the Psionic's handbook. Also if allowed Hyperconscious: Psionic power, Slowlight adds 10% if alone or 1/2 stack with other concealments (Blur becomes 25%, Displacement 55%). But you'd need a Psion with it. |
| BrutishCelt08-31-07, 12:10 PM | Greater blink [Wiz 5] and ghostform [Wiz 8] are in the Spell Compendium, and both are pretty snazzy spells. And the invisibility thing would still be useful if you happen to face a mix of critters that can see invisible and those that can't. I would say that the veil of shadows and displacement should probably be checked separately, since one is a physical form of concealment [veil], and the other is an illusion [displacement]. The blink spell is a transmutation effect that simply makes you "not there" part of the time [and you generally can't hit what isn't there]. |
| Cold Napalm08-31-07, 11:31 PM | Umm...shield+mage armor+alter self+cat's grace = AC of 26 BEFORE whatever dex and magical items you have... |
| Lathi09-01-07, 03:55 AM | There's also Entropic Shield (20% miss chance v. projectiles and rays). Effect comes from an untyped magical field, so could conceivably stack with other effects. Though it's only available as a general cleric spell (also a domain spell, which makes little sense to me) or a warlock invocation, so friends or a magical item would be in order. |
