Hi to all! Our bard would like to know any methods to make his instrument unbreakable, and yet still playable. It would seem he plays so badly that it often suffers from unfortunate accidents (and if nothing else, it would be a convenient weapon when caught flatfooted.) ;)

Thanks for your suggestions.

unless someone's trying to sunder his instrument, there's no reason it should ever break on it's own. If that's unacceptable for a average instrument for your group, then just get a masterwork one and that should satisfy everyone. If anyone still insists that a low perform check destroys the bard's masterwork lute, then they just hate bards and there's no dealing with them.

I would assume that the OP is referring to disgruntled listeners breaking the bard's instrument after a poor performance. That said, I know of no solution to the original question.

If it was a weaponized instrument (a bayonet on the end or useful as club) they could take levels of BoED Annointed Knight PrC. There's a Hardness spell (the Artificer's version is better) and then there is the Ironwood spell for wooden instruments. Another option for a weaponized instrument is to make it an a Illiathid Weapon Graft (Lords of Madness?) or the Graft Weapon Power (XPH).

A bard doesn't need to perform with an Instruments (he can recite poems, sing, whistle, etc.)

Make the instrement out of adamantene (or however you want to spell it) then enchant the heck out of it.

Or, if its a simple instrament the bard perfers, there is a 1st level spell of "Summon instrument". Let it be broke all the time, he can still cast more.

Personally, I've always wanted to make a "draggon dagger" ala power rangers for a bard. Let it also cast summon monster 1-3 times per day, and let it play like a flute/trumpet.

There is no way to make any item truly unbreakable. However, even weak magic items are much tougher than their nonmagical counterparts. A few basic enchantments of almost any sort should be a good start.

Enchant it, and make it laced with adamantine.
Being magic, it has better saves.
Being adamantine, it can take more damage.

What you need is a new bard spell:

Summon Force Instrument

It would be like the spell Summon Instrument, but the instrument created would be composed of Force.

Then it would be unbreakable, but it still would be dispellable, etc.

Two easy spells 3 lvl Augment from Stronghold builders guide book it doubles hardness and hp and increases break DC by 20 of objects for day per lvl.

Hardness 6 lvl spell increases objects hardness by half caster lvl.

This will make it more difficult to break on purpose or accident.

Awesome leads! Many thanks! Your thoughts are truly the fabric that this "better-than-real" world is made of.

May you always roll a 20.
