| Angelus_Drake04-30-06, 08:11 PM | In my current campaign I'm playing a very evil character who is going to have some problems in the next town he has to travel to. I'm going to have him craft a Ring of Mindshielding...but before I do, are there any spells or items that will not only make my toon not come across as evil to the paladins, but will give him an aura of good? so basically....Anything the will give my evil guy a good aura so I can get close to the paladins so he can slaughter them? |
| DaMullet04-30-06, 08:31 PM | Wear a hooded cloak with holy water on it. |
| Seeker9504-30-06, 11:37 PM | I've seen a spell called mask alignment around before, but do not know its sourcebook. It is not in the PHB or the Spell Compendium, and I am too lazy to check through everything else I own. |
| Yak of Darkness04-30-06, 11:49 PM | A combination of the spell undetectable alignment and a carried or worn magic item of good alignment will get you past the first two rounds of detect good okay. If they focus for that third round, however, the jig will be up. If you can somehow aquire a good-aligned magical item with a caster level above 20 (and hold onto it without causing harm to yourself), "you" will radiate an overwhelming aura of good, as though you were a mid-to-high-level cleric of a good deity, and shut down the spell before it can focus any further. Getting such an item is the hard part. ;) |
| Lemmose05-01-06, 12:45 AM | I don't know if you're playing a cleric, or if this would work, but as I read the text, it should. Dispel Evil: "Shimmering, white, Holy energy surrounds you." While they should see the light, it would also cast a holy aura over you, as the light surrounds you. Seriously though, I would use this as a base spell for making a magical item that would hide your alignment within another aura. |
| Pegasos98905-01-06, 07:47 AM | Dispel evils is a [good] spell. Can evil characters cast those? |
| ghost_warlock05-01-06, 10:49 AM | If you can get a hold of a way to cast misdirection you could cast it on a good-aligned character so when the paladins detect evil on you you'll detect as if you were that other character. Not sure about the aura thing unless you use misdirection on a good cleric or one of the paladins themselves (they don't get a saving throw to prevent you from selecting them as the person you detect as). Since the spell doesn't actually give you the aura so much as make the detection spell target someone else instead it should work. They get a saving throw to realize they're being mislead, though. Clerics cannot cast spells with alignment descriptors opposed their own or their deity's. Thus, an evil cleric cannot cast a spell with a good descriptor, such as dispel evil or even protection from evil. However dumb that is - even evil characters could definitely benefit from a protection from evil spell on many occasions - evil is more likely than good to engage in betrayal. Arcane casters, however, can cast spells with whatever descriptors they please so long as the spell is on their spell list. |
| ghost_warlock05-01-06, 10:54 AM | Ha. I just realized that an evil cleric can't summon and bind an evil outsider with an inward-turned magic circle against evil! |
| DeathsAudit05-01-06, 11:41 AM | Ha. I just realized that an evil cleric can't summon and bind an evil outsider with an inward-turned magic circle against evil! They get ally not binding. |
| mvincent05-01-06, 03:44 PM | Ha. I just realized that an evil cleric can't summon and bind an evil outsider with an inward-turned magic circle against evil!Correct, evil clerics cannot actually cast "magic circle against evil", even though they might find it useful. Evil wizards can though. |
| Nialo05-01-06, 04:36 PM | Remember that paladins can't detect good per se, only evil. Unless they're actually going to be scanning you with detect good before they associate with you, I don't think it matters. |
| tiercel05-01-06, 11:07 PM | First off, unless it is somehow important that you have an aura of Good (e.g. you are impersonating a paladin yourself) coming out "blank" on any scan just could mean you are Neutral, which shouldn't be a problem in most places. Secondly, as Nialo has pointed out, having an aura of Good only matters if someone is specifically looking for it (detect good, or something like true sight). Detect evil is probably what you are really worried about, and that only returns "Evil" or "No Reading." A ring of mindshielding should take care of you just fine. If you need to shield other folks too, undetectable alignment is probably the spell you want. Misdirection can do the trick too, but allows Will saves to pierce it. Undetectable alignment lasts 24 hours and doesn't allow the viewer a saving throw (though paranoid detect magic-using folks will notice a faint magical aura, which is abjuration... still, that could be anything, a generic protective ward of some kind). |
| Vaalingrade Ashland05-02-06, 12:44 AM | If you want to ping on Detect Good, purchace a Holy Dagger and conceal it on your person. The effect of the align weapon spell that made the dagger holy will cause a weak Good aura to appear in your square if someone detects for good. |
| Angelus_Drake05-02-06, 01:22 AM | Well thank you all for the advice. Sadly the poor paladin knows I'm hunting him, so they have him well protected. And knowing my DM they will be checking for a good aura before I can get close to him. The holy dagger idea might just get me enough edge to bluff my way into see him :) |
