Identify
Divination
Level: Brd 1, Magic 2, Sor/Wiz 1
Components: V, S, M/DF
Casting Time: 1 hour
Range: Touch
Targets: One touched object
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No
The spell determines all magic properties of a single magic item, including how to activate those functions (if appropriate), and how many charges are left (if any).
Identify does not function when used on an artifact.
Arcane Material Component: A pearl of at least 100 gp value, crushed and stirred into wine with an owl feather; the infusion must be drunk prior to spellcasting.

A cleric of Magic gets Identify as a second level divine spell. Does he have to use the 100gp pearl, as described, to cast it?

EDIT:Typo

I don't think they do...unless it's expensive. :P read the section on material components and divine focuses and find out. It should say there (right in the PHB in how spells work and whatnot)

Clerics do not have to use the 100 gp pearl, but they so have to use a higher level slot.

No he does not. He has to use his divine focus (holy symbol),
One of the benefits. :D

(My duplicate answer of two others is the downside to opening all the threads I want to read in separate Firefox tabs, and then reading them. Time delay in responses.)

Such a cleric gains it as a domain spell; simple thing to overlook, but very important.

The answer to your question is simple: the slash denotes that there is either a material component to use (in this case, an arcane material component) or a divine focus. Much like with scry, the spell description defines the way each class casts the spell in terms of components.

Primarily because if a party wants the Cleric of Knowledge to identify their items, he can do only one per day. Their three items will take 3 days. A third level wizard can cast multiple Identifies in one day, so can provide the answers on that day, albeit at a much higher cost iin gp.
