| WSITY11-19-05, 07:10 PM | hello i've just started playing d&d and i play a half-elf sorceror but i want to wear studded leather but it has a 15% arcana spell failure. how do you roll for that?? this forum does not seem to have a find function so i can't find it |
| CryoSilver11-19-05, 07:17 PM | Each time you cast a spell that isn't Stilled, you roll a d%. If it is a 15 or lower, the spell fails and is wasted. Arcane Spell Failure: Armor interferes with the gestures that a spellcaster must make to cast an arcane spell that has a somatic component. Arcane spellcasters face the possibility of arcane spell failure if they’re wearing armor. Bards can wear light armor without incurring any arcane spell failure chance for their bard spells. Casting an Arcane Spell in Armor: A character who casts an arcane spell while wearing armor must usually make an arcane spell failure roll. The number in the Arcane Spell Failure Chance column on Table: Armor and Shields is the chance that the spell fails and is ruined. If the spell lacks a somatic component, however, it can be cast with no chance of arcane spell failure. Shields: If a character is wearing armor and using a shield, add the two numbers together to get a single arcane spell failure chance. It's pretty clearly marked. Did you read that section? |
| WSITY11-19-05, 07:25 PM | i did read that but it didn't explain that you have to roll percentile dice. any way thanks |
| mythSSK11-19-05, 07:47 PM | Be sure to check if the spell you're trying to cast actually has a somatic component, though. As it says in the quote above, if it doesn't, then you don't need to worry about ASF. Spells like true strike, featherfall, etc, don't have somatic components, and therefore do not incur arcane spell failure. |
| Seeker9511-19-05, 09:15 PM | i did read that but it didn't explain that you have to roll percentile dice. You don't have to roll percentile dice. You can also roll a d20, and failure occurs on a 1, 2, or 3. :D (Or any other three predetermined numbers.) |
| Nialo11-20-05, 12:49 AM | With percentile die, you have a d00 (A d10 with marked 00,10,20 etc.) and a d10. You roll the d10 to determine the first didgit, and a d00 to the 2nd. So if I was rolling for spell failure and I got: d00 - 10 d10 - 3 My roll would be a 13 and the spell would fail. However, like Seeker said - rolling a d20 is much easier. |
| WSITY11-21-05, 04:17 AM | if i have light proffessicy for armour do i don't get the failure because in the rule book it mentions something about that |
| Sydney Losstarot11-21-05, 04:27 AM | Even if you are proficient with the armor, you still suffer a chance for arcane spell failure. |
