Can metamagic feats be used with arcane fire, archmage ability? For instance, can I take a 5th level spell and turn it into arcane fire which would do 10d6 points of damage, then maximize it?

No. Metamagic feats must be used with spells, and Arcane Fire is a Supernatural Ability.

However, you could petition your DM to allow it. An example with a 5th level Archmage.

Channel a 2nd level spell into Arcane Fire, so it deals (5d6+2d6) 7d6. Then apply the Maximize Spell metamagic feat, which would raise the spell level by 3. So you would actually be channeling a 5th level spell to deal 7d6, but it would be Maximized.
