Hey all. Im a sorceror planning on becoming an archmage at 14th level, and I have a question about the high arcana "spell-like ability"

You must know the spell to take it as a spell like ability, but since the sorceror can "unlearn" spells, would he be able to take a spell as a spell like ability, then later drop that spell for another one while retaining the original as a spell like ability?

If so, then that would be really cool. Might lend a tad more flexibility to playing a sorceror.

There isn't really anything in the rules to specifically say that you could not, primarily because class features do not have prerequisites in the same precise and defined sense as a feat does. However the lack of any text clarifying the issue is largely due to the fact that the Archmage prestige class was originally printed in the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting, under a rules system (3.0 D&D) where the only mentioned method for sorcerer to potentially swap out spells was the use of a wish spell, in the special qualities section of an NPC write up in a later section of the book.

Personally I would not recommend it, mainly because its likely to attract a DM's intervention, an because it seems a little blatantly abusive of the rules text, and omissions within it.

However, if your goal was to simply have access to more spells, then I would permit a custom/house-rule High-Arcana ability to allowed you to gain a bonus spell known in exchange for a spell slot of its level (plus the 5th level spell slot that is also normally expended in attaining the Spell-like ability).

Well, i doubt it would be too abusive to the rules, cause it would only be worthwhile to do it once or twice, otherwise you really mess up your spells/day.

I do like the idea of the cusom high arcana. Ill propose that.

To gain the ability by loseing a spell slot, then later chage the spell thats in "slot" i as a DM would rule that that u can still can not use that slot just by changeing the spell in that slot.Again prob a DM choice but u are giveing up a spell slot to gain the archmage power not giveing up a Known spell

I don't see why not, since actually knowing the spell in question is not exactly a prereq to selecting it to be made into a SLA. This would also work with the innate spell feat from PGTF.:)

So I could select teleport to be made into a SLA, then swap it out at the next lv for a new 5th lv spell.
