hi guys, repeat thread from CO boards, but my game is at noon and i need a quick answer: from a strict reading of the rules, it seems like the archmage's spell-like ability can be applied to any spell with any metamagic on it, providing the archmage has a slot of high enough level. so what happens when he applies a sudden x feat to it? from the wording, he might get it as a spell like ability once a day with no extra level cost, twice a day with no extra cost, or twice a day with the cost of the feat it emulates (house rule, this seems reasonable to me)? also, if the archmage had turn undead from some source and divine metamagic, could he boost his lev 9 spells up a bit with no extra cost, with daily uses of turning used up (thus unable to turn that day since he'd only have a few turnings)? I can imagine a Quickened Simbul's Spell Trigger as a spell like ability and Quickened Timestops ruining games...

My gut reaction is that it just won't work.

I might allow it in my games after a lot of thought. I know that there are only 2 conclusions I can come to though: either it won't work, or that the resources used to boost the spell will be permanently tied up. So if you pick up fireball and use sudden maximize on it, one of your daily uses of (Sp) Fireball will be maximized but you won't be able to maximize anything else. Likewise, divine quickening would drop your number of daily turns by 5.

A better solution is probably just to pick up quicken/empower/maximize spell-like ability and apply it to the spell that you convert to an (Sp).

The sudden metamagic feats allow you to apply a metamagic effect to a spell wihtout increasing its level.

Metamagic can only be applied to spells. Spell like abilities require diffrent feats such as quicken spell-like ability from the monster manual (or was is savage species?)
