| mhr7406-30-05, 03:18 PM | Can you recharge staffs and wands, etc., w/ a feat or over time? |
| DwarvinJedi06-30-05, 03:48 PM | mostly no, IIRC some Staves allow for recharging, and most rods that have charges do, but I do not know of any wands that allow recharging. I believe it would not be terribly unbalancing to allow a feat that could recharge wands, but It would have to come with a high cost. |
| He Who Lurks06-30-05, 04:23 PM | Many people use a house rule to allow a caster with the appropriate item creation feat to recharge a charged item at some fraction of the total cost. Most people who use this rule base the fraction on the number of charges restored. For example: A wizard wants to recharge a wand. To create this wand from scratch, it would cost 5,000 gp and 400 xp. To recharge it, we remove some reasonable amount from the cost, say 5% or 250 gp. Some use 10% or more. This represents the actual materials that go into the wand itself (wood, gems, metals, etc...). After that, it's simple proportions. This wizard only wants to restore 10 charges, not all 50, so the remaining cost is divided by 5, so it would cast 950 gp and 76 xp to restore 10 charges to a wand. This is only an example, of course. The cost might need to be adjusted to fit the campaign and whatnot, and the actual gp/xp proportions used were pulled from memory, so they may need to be double-checked. :) |
| mhr7406-30-05, 04:42 PM | I hear there is an Unearthed Arcana variant that allows recharging of these items. Anyone know what that is? |
| Seeker9506-30-05, 04:50 PM | I allow recharging at the same "price per charge" as a 50-charge item. Take the total price of a fully charged item. Divide by 50. This is the recharge price per charge. I simply require that an item always be recharged "to full". |
| mhr7406-30-05, 04:56 PM | How long does it take to recharge and item fully per your house rules? Also per your house rules, can you recharge your own items w/ the appropriate Item Creation feat? |
| VirgilCaine06-30-05, 05:09 PM | http://www.seankreynolds.com/rpgfiles/misc/rechargingitems.html Here's a rule on it. |
| tiercel06-30-05, 08:42 PM | I agree that I have no problem with recharging in principle, though I'd require something to be recharged to full as well. It would require the appropriate Craft feat for the item. The cost for recharging a 50-use item (e.g. a wand) with X charges expended would simply be the normal crafting cost for the full item times X/50. The time to recharge would be the normal crafting time times X/50 as well. If you wanted to houserule in a slight discount (because you already have the actual wand and it already has sympathies for that sort of magic), I could maybe see throwing in a 10% off rule -- but that's definitely a pure houserule. |
| Seeker9507-01-05, 10:57 AM | 1. How long does it take to recharge and item fully per your house rules? 2. can you recharge your own items w/ the appropriate Item Creation feat?1. 1 day per 1000gp value of the recharge. Minimum of one day. 2. Yes.3. If you wanted to houserule in a slight discount, I could maybe see throwing in a 10% off rule.3. I would not grant a discount. While you may already have the wand, you don't have the special "recharge" materials. Basically, I do not want to turn a DM-gift (recharging) into a DM-freebie. |
| Oneiros07-01-05, 03:37 PM | Check out this recent thread (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=453605) for some other house rules (including my own :D ) For recharging, I don't charge XP, but the initial cost of creating wands and staffs IMC is a little higher, too. Also, a staff actually has to be a +1 weapon (staff) first, but it can be created with the Craft Staff feat. Oh, and the Recharge rules in Unearthed Arcana don't have anything to do with recharging items - it's an alternate spell recovery method for spell casters (instead of the 8 hours rest rule.) |
| Illithid Tentacles07-01-05, 04:45 PM | I agree with the GP cost on recharging wands (original GP cost / 50 * no. of charges), but not the "must be charged up to full" thing. When it's first created, yes, but to recharge it, no. As for how long it takes, I'd say it depends on how many spell slots the character has. I'd let a 4th level wizard with a 15 INT restore a wand of Magic Missle by 7 or fewer charges per day (4 1st level spell slots and 3 2nd level slots), but he couldn't use those slots for anything else that day- essentially, you memorize the spell so many times, then transfer them into the wand for future use. So for said wizard to fully recharge an expended wand of Magic Missle, using all available slots every day, it'd take 8 days (50 / 7 = 7 and some change). And of he'd have to have the Craft Wand feat, otherwise he wouldn't know how to recharge it. |
| The Simbul07-02-05, 01:04 AM | I allow recharging by having the character pay the appropriate percentile difference based on remaining charges, although when it comes to staves that double as magic weapons after their charges are gone (like a Staff of Power) I subtract the cost of the magic weapon itself from the market price before determining to costs to recharge. It basically stems from having a PC in a campaign who had a bin of +2 Quarterstaffs left over from all her remaining depleted staffs of power, that "by the rules" she could not recharge. |
