Are Spell Points Balanced? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Okay, I am thinking about making an option to convert spell slots to spell points. A level 0 spell costs half a point, a 1 costs 1, a 2 costs 3, a 3 costs 5 a 4 costs 7 a 5 costs 9, a 6 costs 11, a 7 costs 13, an 8 costs 15, and a 9 costs 17.

No scaling like with psionics, convert slots to points by how much a spell costs. (a 9th level spell slot becomes 17 spell points.) but a point system would allow much greater flexibility. Would it be balanced?

If you do a straight-up slot-to-point conversion for both spells and spell slots you must include some manner of scaling as per 3.5 psionics (that is, a fireball only does 5d6 damage unless you pay more points) or it will be terribly unbalanced. Spell points provide slightly more power in the form of increased flexibility anyway - couple that with free spell scaling and you'll have casters fit to make a psion break down in tears.

Why can't a point system scale acording to caster level like a slot system does? Because of the flexability?

If that's the case, could you reduce the number of points and put CL scaling and have it be balanced?

Also, I still plan to make casters prepare spells (not sorcerers or bards obviously), but they alot their points however they see fit.

Already done, man. Unearthed Arcana. I havent used the system, but it seems to be a good one.

Also in the variant from UA. Wizard, cleric, pally, ranger, all prepare spells, and sorc/bard are more like psions, just have less SP/PP.
