I looked through the DMG and noticed that staves run out of charges very quickly. A Frost Staff has a total of 4 charges. Is this right? I mean, said Frost Staff costs 56,250 gp. 4 spells, 56,250 gp? That's it? Am I wrong in saying that staves suck? If so, please explain.

Not really, wands, now wands suck! A wand of fireball (8th level) is more exspensive then a staff of fire, but staff have more versitility, staves rule, specially if you're crafting them...

You're misinterpreting the rules on staves. All staves start with 50 charges. When (to use your example) the staff of frost says "Ice storm (1 charge)", it means that it only takes one of those fifty charges to cast ice storm. Likewise, it takes one charge to cast wall of ice and two to cast cone of cold. All these draw their charges from the same pool of 50, so a staff of frost could be used to cast:
50 ice storms
50 walls of ice
25 cones of cold
25 ice storms and 25 walls of ice
20 ice storms and 15 cones of cold
and so on and so forth.

By the way, when Morotis meant by a wand of fireball (8th level) was a wand that casts fireball at caster level 8.

I have been toying with the idea of a eternal stafe similar to the eternal wands in eberron. Since it has always struck me as strange that a caster would put that much into a item that wasn't permenat.

Is the charges on staff's what bothers people

I like the idea of a staff and that thy run out, thats the cost for having more spells aday... you save staves for emergencies and they should last you a while... not to mention 50 is alot of uses... if you use 2 charges per adventure thats 25 adventures... if you use one charge every 2 encounters (Which seems more accurate to me) thats 100 encounters you have with a nice staff... More if yo u save it. Then again I am really tight with my spells per day, when the rest of the parties wizards have used all their spells ive used 2 cantrips 1 first level and 1 second level spell... So a staff in my hands would go along long way...

I can appreciate what you mean Linkrulesx10 for myself I like magic items that can last through my career. Even if they might need a little reworking from time to time. Its why staff's aren't one of the items that I create when playing a wizard.

ahh but thats the difference between you and me, we both like long lasting mgic items but I think a staff wll last beyond my whole career, I rarely cast spells and they regenerate, a staff doesnt so I think I would only use it in a pinch... I would never buy a staff though, I would always make own...
