| Branto04-23-07, 05:52 PM | Hello all, I was just curious if any of the various D&D supplements has a spell along the lines of the famous Diablo 2 Corpse Explosion spell, or the Death Nova from Guild Wars. I'd be terribly amazed if there wasn't, somewhere. If anyone knows of any such, I'd appreciate the basic info. Name of the spell, which supplement it comes from, and how it works. Heck, the details would be nice too, if you have 'em. |
| NobodyRemembersThis04-23-07, 06:10 PM | There is an entire splatbook devoted to it. The spells are a little strong for their levels; but not bad. LOOKY LOOKY (http://www.wizards.com/dnd/main.asp?x=d2/diabloii,3) |
| Branto04-23-07, 06:22 PM | Aaah. The actual Diablo2 conversion for D&D. Yeah, that figures. ;) Anything aside from that, though, in normal D&D? |
| Morwen04-23-07, 07:13 PM | Death Throes seems appropriate (I think it's in SC, but it could be PHB2). |
| Tempest Stormwind04-23-07, 07:50 PM | Complete Scoundrel. I only flipped through the book, but Fatal Flame is the closest D&D's ever had to Corpse Explosion. The book also had Escape Rune, which is essentially Town Portal. It probably had other effects similar to Diablo in it as well. Strictly speaking, though, Fatal Flame is closer to Death Nova, as I believe it triggered on death instead of targeting a corpse. It just had an effect far closer to Corpse Explosion than to Death Nova. (Assuming Death Nova hasn't changed; I stopped playing when Factions came out and I could no longer field my armies of 20+ undead in PvE due to a PvP exploit.) |
| Branto04-23-07, 08:01 PM | Fatal Flames, huh? If you could find me some details on that one, I'd be much appreciative. Mostly I'm wondering if it's different enough from what I could come up to.. uhh.. bother thinking up a new one. ;) |
| Terraneaux04-23-07, 08:06 PM | There's a 9th level spell called "Detonate" that straight up kills someone, causing them to explode all over their party for damage. Not quite what you are looking for I think. |
| Deep Blue 900004-23-07, 08:13 PM | The are a variety of spells that turn creatures into bombs that detonate when they die but those all requires live creatures or animate undead. I don't believe there's anything that you can cast on a corpse to make it blow up. |

Not quite what you are looking for I think. Ooh, very nice, but yeah, I'm looking for something a bit lower level. Low enough, at least, that a powerful warlock might enchant armor with it and make herself a squad of suicide troops. Mwahahhaa. :D The are a variety of spells that turn creatures into bombs that detonate when they die but those all requires live creatures or animate undead. I don't believe there's anything that you can cast on a corpse to make it blow up. Actually, the ones you cast on live creatures (which would be more of the GW Death Nova than D2 Corpse Explosion) sound just find to me, though ideally I'd like something with the versatility to be used in either fashion. Could you tell me more about some of those ones for live/undead creatures? If I were to come up with my own spell along these lines.. it would function similarly to the premise of Corpse Explosion; IE turning spiritual forces normally released during death into an explosive force. It would be dual purpose, either cast on the living and, if they 'expire' within a few rounds of casting, cause them to explode, OR could be cast on fresh corpses. The latter use would be at diminished results, though, as much of the spiritual energy would have already escaped. Furthermore, the spell would function a little differently based on what it's used on. For example, constructs and non-intelligent undead would produce weaker explosions. Elemental outsiders would alter the type of damage of the explosion to their element. Oozes would produce weak explosions too, but anything hit by their explosion would be subjected to their corrosive properties. I'd probably see the base amount of damage be pretty low, so as to keep the spell level itself low. However, there would be a bonus to damage equal to double the armor rating of the creature's armor (natural or from.. uhh.. armor) After all, fragments of platemail flying through the air would hurt more than the shredded remains of padded armor. ;) Oh! And maybe the spell could also have a minor affect against spells like Astral Projection, like.. will save vs. whatever or the spell fails and you take a d6 or two. Is there anything pre-existing that is very similar to that? |
| Deep Blue 900004-23-07, 10:22 PM | Fatal Flame (Complete Scoundrel) causes a target creature to explode upon death and deal 1 dmg/HD to nearby creatures when it dies. Death Throes (Spell Compendium) is similar but deals 1d8 per level and lasts all day but only affects yourself. Unliving Weapon (Book of Vile Darkness) affects undead only but detonates for 1d6/2HD whenever they take any damage. This spell is ideal for making swarms of kamikaze skeletons or zombies. |
| NobodyRemembersThis04-23-07, 11:06 PM | I have the diablo splatbook (3.0) - I'll PM ya the details after I get some rest. |
| Iver Gearsham04-24-07, 03:19 AM | Death Throws Combo with Magic Jar you just need a good way to stash your body on the same plane IE no Portable Hole or Bags of Holding as they are Seperat planes I recommend an Iron Golem they are hollow or a Stone Golem you can make them hollow. Ever consider Zombes or Skeltons wearing trench coats that have Explosive Runes on the inside Flashing intruders  :gah: :headexplo . Another is to Fire Trap their mouths and hands closed so when they Bite or Grapple Boom! |
| Part-Human204-25-07, 02:13 AM | Libris Mortis has a feat called Distructive Retribution. Any undead you create/raise cause a negative energy burst on destruction. |
| NobodyRemembersThis04-25-07, 09:24 PM | Dammitall, I lost the book. :headexplo Found it on Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Diablo-II-Diablerie-D-Accessory/dp/0786917601/ref=si3_rdr_bb_product/002-6126395-5949633) |
| Peregrine_Wolf04-26-07, 04:00 PM | Delayed Blast Fireball. Place the bead in someones mouth or something.....a few turns later..... BOOOOOOOOM!!!!!!!111eleven!!shift1!! |

I think death throes combined with death pact is even meaner (though somewhat costly). Die, explode, get (true) resurrected and loot the corpses. Death throes is very strong since it is a no save 60ft (?) radius area spell that deals force damage and has no caster level cap for dmg if I recall correctly and a long duration. Even "better" with sudden maximize and a familiar to share it (and death pact) with. |

I've got an evil warlock who wants exploding minions! ;) |

| NoldorForce04-27-07, 11:27 AM | It's actually a 30'-radius spell. There's actually something in my sig for using it offensively; my preferred method involves having it as a SLA and placing it on clones. |

This spell is ideal for making swarms of kamikaze skeletons or zombies. Someone beat me to it. I used a bunch of undead with this spell in an undead army that attacked a city in my game. It was fun to see my player's faces when the wall-climbing ghouls exploded, destroying ballistas and killing thier operators. |
