Does anyone have suggestions for elementals aside from the usual Air, Earth, Fire, and Water? What kinds of spells (and what spells in particular) would be included?

Thank you all in advance.

Well, you could have elementals from the para & quasi elemental planes.

Or you could use different base elemental set-ups like the Chinese (Earth, Metal, Fire, Water, & Wood), or the Japanese which has the standard four plus Void.

D&D elementals are based on the classical (Greek) four-element system. Aristotle added a fifth element to this system, called aithêr. In Latin, it is called aether, or ether in English. It is otherwise known as the quintessence ("fifth essence"). This element was percieved to be that which the heavens were made of. It was eternal, unearthly, and unmeasurable. It weighed nothing yet had unspeakable power. Incidentally, it's also the least understood of all the classical elements.

Is that the sort of thing you were looking for?

Well, there's also Mud, Lightning, Magma, and Dust. Then there's Ooze, Steam, and Ice. Then you could also have Crystal, Metal, and Plasma.

The mephits in the 3.5 MM can easily be used as bases for elementals (since that's what they are by subtype).

Something I have been tinkering with for a non-D&D game is a detailed system of Proto-Elements, Elemental Forces and Elements, slanted to magic with a more "scientific" approach.. Heres the basics, if you like it, feal free to tweak it however you want.

**What I am posting is a very early version of it....it needs work.

Energy | Charge | Spirit | Elektromancy | Spirit , Shade

Light | Eternal | Soul | Photomancy | Order , Law , Judgement

Gravity | Exist | Logic | Mnemonomancy | Arcane , Psionics

Fire | Reaction | Instinct | Pyromancy | Chaos , Anarchy , War

Air | Gas | Creativity | Aeromancy | Illusion , Art

Water | Liquid | Emotion | Hydromancy | Mystic , Dream

Earth | Solid | Body | Geomancy | Life , Nature

Time | Decay | Wisdom | Cronomancy | Entropy , Death

If you want to make up some of your own unique elementals, just think of what would happen where the listed elemental planes overlap.

Where air and water overlap you get ice elementals
water and earth = mud
air and positive energy = lightning
air and negative energy = darkness
fire and water = steam or smoke
earth and fire = lava
air and fire = plasma

You get the idea. Let your imagination go wild.

In normal D&D cosmology, each of the inner planes (or inner planar regions) has unique elementals (with a few exceptions). "None known" doesn't mean the planes are uninhabited; it just means that there are no real defined native inhabitants.

Major elemental planes:
Earth: Earth elementals, dao, earth mephit, xorn, earth weird
Air: Air elementals, genie, air mephit, invisible stalkers, air weird
Fire: Fire elementals, efreet, fire mephit, salamander, azer, fire weird, magmin
Water: Water elementals, marid, water mephit, water weird

Energy planes:
Positive: Xag-ya, ravid
Negative: Xeg-yi

Paraelemental planes: [Admixtures of two major elemental planes. They are occasionally portrayed as separate planes, or merely as planar regions.]
Ice: (Air/water) Ice paraelementals, ice mephits
Ooze: (Earth/water) Ooze paraelementals, ooze mephits
Smoke: (Air/fire) Smoke paraelementals, smoke mephits
Magma: (Fire/earth) Magma paraelementals, magma mephits

Positive quasielemental planes: [Admixtures of one of the major elemental planes and the positive energy plane. They are occasionally portrayed as separate planes, or merely as planar regions.]
Lightning: (Air/positive) Lightning quasielemental, shocker
Radiance: (Fire/positive) None known
Steam: (Water/positive) Steam mephits
Mineral: (Earth/positive) None known

Negative quasielemental planes: [Admixtures of one of the major elemental planes and the negative energy plane. They are occasionally portrayed as separate planes, or merely as planar regions.]
Ash: (Fire/negative) None known
Dust: (Earth/negative) Dust mephit
Salt: (Water/negative) Salt mephit
Vacuum: (Air/negative) None known

Other inner planes:
Shadow: Nightshades
Ethereal: Ghosts

Well, sonic is some kind of element, there are many spells with sonic subtype, some creatures are immune to sonic attacks and spells, and you can choose sonic in the endure elements spell.

Hmm, let's see...hydrogen, helium, oxygen, iridium, californium... yep, lots of elements. Beware my einsteinium elemental!

Sonic, Acid, Electricity, Cold, and Fire are Energy types in 3.5, not quite the same as Elements in the classical sense. There is a rough correspondence of:

Fire -> Fire
Water -> Cold
Air -> Electricity
Earth -> Acid
Void/Ether -> Sonic

If you want :)

Think about a necromancer and the BoVD....perhaps he isolated some liquid pain and discovered a way to build/summon a Pain Elemental

Even if it's nonsensical, it at least sounds cool:)

That aside, think of other planes....Shadow Elemental, etc.

Hmmm...I would have tied the quintessence to [Force] spells and related effects myself. Use whatever works best.

Just pick up some Manual Of The Planes, any edition, really. That'll give you good ideas. And when in doubt, make a new one.

The ethereal plane and the plane of shadow are not inner planes, they are transitive planes, overlapping with the material.

Classic Elements used in other games and video games, in no particular order:

Ground
Rock
Poison
Fire
Electricity
Air
Water
Cold
Beast/Animal
Plant/Grass/Wood
Insect
Steel/Metal
Light/Holy/Good
Dark/Unholy/Evil
Crystal
Ghost/Death
Psychic/Spirit
Smoke
Gravity
Sound
Force
War
Chaos
Law
Life
Time
Machine
Hate
Love
Purity
Filth
Beauty
Space/Cosmic

You can go on and on, but those are what I can think of off the top of my head. I know I'm probably missing a lot more, but oh well, somebody else can get those, or I can add more later.

So they are. I was misremembering 2E cosmology as 3E. In 2E, the Ethereal Plane connected the Inner Planes as the Asteral Plane connected the Outer Planes, and the Plane of Shadow was a demi-plane connected to the Ethereal (making it essentiall an Inner Plane).
