Thomas’ Knock-Out Shot
Evocation
Level: Sor/Wiz 2
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standerd action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft/ caster level)
Target: 15 ft Radius
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Fortitude half
Spell Resistance: Yes
A small ball of energy shoots forth from your hand.
When it reaches its target destination it burst dealing
1d6 points of non-lethal electrical damage per caster
level (max 20d6) to every thing in the area of effect. You can
also choose to have it do 1d6 lethal electrical damage per
three caster levels (max 6d6).

I was just wondering if this spell was balanced before I am going to ask my DM if I can research it. How can I change it if its not?

Thomas’ Wrath Drain
Necromancy
Level: Sor/Wiz 2
Components: S
Casting Time: 1 standerd action
Range: Close (25 ft +5 ft/2 caster levels)
Target: 10ft Radius
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Fortitude half
Spell Resistance: Yes
Each creature in the area of effect lose HP 1d4
per caster level (max 5d4 per creature). You gain the amount of HP they lose. On a successful save only half the HP is lost. HP you
Do not need is lost.

Now this spell I know is not balenced but using the custom spell creation rules I used it is a level 2 spell. 1 point for close range, 2 point for 10 ft radius and 1 point for 1d4 of HP syphoning scaleing per level to a max of 5. 4 points in total and level 2 spells are 4-5 points. heck Scorching Rays is a level 4 spell by these standerd so I dont know. What do you think?

Nope. At least, not yet.

Thomas' Knock-out does more damage than fireball with a less-resited energy form at a lower spell slot. Even though it is non-lethal, it is just as deadly when it causes enough damage, as an unconscious opponent is as good as dead. However, it is a good concept. To bring it in line, make it 3rd level and add a material component.

I don't know what "custom spell creation rules" you are using, but it looks like they need a lot of re-customization. Wraith Drainis a mass vampiric touch (a 3rd level spell) that doesn't require a touch, with no chance of failure and almost no risk of melee combat. I would make this 7th level as written since the only defense against this is spell resistance.

*cough*Empathic Transfer, Hostile*cough*

I agree with Seeker, both are too strong, they need to be toned down ... :tiphat: ..

The first one: Reduce the damage (d6 per 2 levels of non-lethal, cap at 10d6?? or 8d6??), or raise to level 3...

The 2nd one: Look up Empathic Transfer, Hostile in Psionics Handbook, and check out the Psionics board for all the problems and how "broken" this kind of effect is ... just so you know what you're dealing with ... (not to discourage you .. ) ... considering a Mass Vampiric Touch, as Seeker suggests might be an idea as well ... hmm, think "Chain Spell" metamagic, and see how that goes ...

What level would you put this then. I would say level 7.

Thomas’ Shadow Drain
Necromancy
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft/ caster level)
Target: 20 ft Radius
Duration: 1 minute / level
Saving Throw: Fortitude negates
Spell Resistance: Yes
All creatures within the radius of the spell
take 4d6 Con damage.

Thomas’ Shadow Drain9th.

If you want it to be 7th, change the range to close and change the duration to Instantaneous.

As an aside...

Is there a reason you don't use material components in your really powerful spells?

:OMG!

well, dare we compare???

Shadow Drain: 4d6 Con Avg: 14 Max: 24
Ignoring Saves/SR, of course .. this will pretty much be a save or die spell for most things ...

Other level 7 spells:

Delayed Blast Fireball: up to 20d6 dmg .. avg: 63 max: 120
This just hurts .. but more likely than not, you'll survive ..

Prismatic Spray: varies ..
Hurst lots .. possibility of killing ... but you have to roll right, AND fail a save ..

Finger of Death: save or die ... ok, we got a good comparison now ..

so ... let's think about this:

Range:
TSD: medium
FoD: Close

Area:
TSD: 20' radius
FoD: 1 target

Dmg:
TSD: 4d6 Con, save neg.
FoD: death, save for 3d6 +level (max 25)

Better range, more targets, pretty much the same effect on failed save, but no dmg on made save ...

Sorry, but the save neg does not warrant an increase in range, and especially not an upgrade to an area spell ..

Symbol of Death is an 8th level and capable of killing multiple creatures ... I'd think about bringing it up to 8th level .. if not 9th .. Con dmg is nasty ... you might as well treat is a save-or-die spell ...

wholly crap!! I didn't notice the duration before!!!! That's nuts!!! I agree with seeker .... that duration pretty should be instantaneous .. there's no way it's even a viable 9th level power with a duration like that ... esp. with that kind of damage!!

btw ... take a look what this thing would do to a Great Wyrm - Black Dragon:

Con 27, HP: 536 ... Avg: down to Con 13, HP: 277

Since it's Con Dmg .. and not a penalty or nothing, just drop it on him again ... and he's pooched ... and that's only looking at averages:

A capped roll via Maximize (yeah, I know, 10th level slot .. unless using imp. metamagic ..) ..

Brings it down to:
Con 3 .... HP: 92
:uh-huh:

Idon't like material components for combat spells, If the spell seems more like a ritual like Planar Binding or Animate Dead then I see them as apropriate, if not its just doesn't fit my veiw of magic. I do require matterial componets for Item crafting though, and they need to be spesificly sought out.
