An interesting situation came up in our most recent game. The party paladin got swallowed by a half-dragon dinosaur, and then the sorcerer hit the monster with a fireball. Now, I'm almost sure that, being swallowed and all, the paladin should take no damage, but my DM wasn't so sure of it and I couldn't find it anywhere in the rules. Does anyone know what the rule on this is, and where to find it?

Not sure where you could find an actual written rule on it, but the paladin's clearly got total cover.

The same what Malic says. The paladin is completely shielded from the blast by the dragons body. Maybe if it was the killing blow that the creature was torn open by the blast and then the paladin could recieve some damage from it.

From the SRD:

Total Cover

If you don’t have line of effect to your target he is considered to have total cover from you. You can’t make an attack against a target that has total cover.
If the damage caused to an interposing barrier shatters or breaks through it, the fireball may continue beyond the barrier if the area permits; otherwise it stops at the barrier just as any other spell effect does.
Thus, if the fireball had killed the dragon and rent its stomach in two, the paladin would be at risk of harm. Otherwise, no.

I totally agree with kSquared on this point. Total cover.

Don't bother with total cover, as the breaking the barrier can be DM adjucated to happen as a logic due to massive fireball damage, where is the "line of Effect?"

Even if the fireball is enough to drop the monster with plenty to spare I wouldn't damage someone swallowed. A fireball isn't going to burst the body open, it's just going to crisp it.
